Job summary

Healthcare Scientist, 1 WTE band 6 on 3 years fixed-term contract, Immunology Lab, Department of Laboratory MedicineThis is for a well-motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered scientist to support the diagnostic Immunology service at GOSH.The Immunology laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital provides diagnostic services to the Trust, including allergy, autoimmunity, immunophenotyping, cell culture and proteins, as well as a national specialist molecular diagnostic service for immune deficiency.The successful candidate will undertake routine investigations and duties, provide support to senior scientists and supervise the junior staff in the department. Previous experience in aUKAS accredited diagnostic lab, and a good working knowledge of flow cytometry are essential.Please ensure that you read the attached job description and person specification carefully as your application will be judged against these criteria.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out laboratory investigations on paediatric samples unsupervised as requested by the clinical services, taking responsibility for quality and accuracy of the results produced
  • To have knowledge of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in use within the department and be proficient in the most frequently performed techniques and update SOPs as required
  • To maintain a level of professional conduct as laid down by the Health Professional Council.
  • To maintain a standard of technical quality commensurate with that of a leading NHS Trust teaching hospital
  • To participate in the training of staff as required
  • To participate in the training of visiting personnel from other departments or trusts
  • To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department.
  • To participate, in collaboration with colleagues in research projects within the department and also across the directorate and ICH
