Job summary

Leopard Ward is 14 beds 6 being HDU. Leopard cares for children with a variety of acute and chronic respiratory conditions, including a variety of congenital anomalies, complex asthma, cystic fibrosis and empyemas/effusions requiring chest drains. Children requiring long-term ventilation via a tracheostomy and those requiring non-invasive ventilation are also nursed on Leopard Ward.

Our patients span in age from new born to adolescent. They require a varied input of nursing care from both low to high dependency, and have both surgical and medical requirements.

Candidates need to be driven and motivated to ensure our patients and their families receive the highest possible levels of care. We welcome candidates from a variety of backgrounds including Intensive Care and general paediatrics. We support adult registered nurses joining our team and if you have the right skills and experience, we can support you with the paediatric element of your role. You will join a hardworking and supportive multidisciplinary team, making it an enjoyable and rewarding environment to work in.

As a Unit we are committed to your professional development and offer educational opportunities which can be individually structured to include study to degree or Masters Level. We have a team of Nurse Practice Educators who support staff professional development.

Main duties of the job

- To provide clinical leadership to a designated nursing team and ensure the provision of high quality nursing care to children and families.- To act as a role model and expert clinical practitioner- To assist in the safe, effective and efficient management of the department within allocated resources- To promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practice- To undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Ward Manager- To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion In Practice (NHS Commissioning Board Dec 2012).- Contribute towards achieving the 'Great Ormond Street Hospital Vision for Nursing' (Jan 2013).
