Job summary

GOSH is a national and international centre of excellence within International and Patient Care (I&PC), we provide specialist care and treatment to children from predominantly the Middle Eastern regions, as well as the UK.

We are seeking an experienced Arabic Interpreter/Translator to provide interpreting and translation service in order to facilitate a therapeutic relationship between the patients and/or families and the healthcare providers based within I&PC.

You must have a demonstrable experience as an Interpreter/Translator, ideally in a healthcare setting . You must be a strong team player with proven commitment to providing a high-quality service. You must be able to communicate effectively in both Arabic and English and build credible working relationships with our patients, families and staff. Attention to detail is essential, as well as knowledge of Islamic cultural/religious issues.

Main duties of the job

  • To interpret accurately in consultations/ meetings conveying clinical and other information between the patient/family and healthcare provider and vice versa on complex, confidential and sometimes distressing topics including notifying
  • serious illness or end of life discussions, medications, use of clinical and care plans
  • To ensure all written and oral communications are in culturally appropriate style between patients & families, clinical and non-clinical staff
  • To be integral part of the multidisciplinary clinical team (MDT) and attend ward rounds giving interpreting support as well as support on specific patient and family issues, either raised by the family or of concern to others. Also, attend ward meetings such as the weekly psychosocial/ daily handover meetings as and when they take place.
  • To interpret between families and healthcare providers during multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings
  • When signing consent forms, to ensure all information is relayed accurately to families, i.e. names, relation to patient and date of birth
  • To attend to non-verbal cues that may indicate that the listeners are confused or do not understand and check as to whether clarification is needed
  • To intervene for clarification if you do not understand the terminology or message
  • To raise awareness of cultural differences and expectations
  • To adhere to the Trust's code of ethics covering confidentiality and impartiality.
