Job summary
The Newborn Genomes Programme is being led by Genomics England Ltd in partnership with NHS England. This involves the delivery of a screening research study (called the Generation Study) in the NHS, with feedback of results for clinical conditions where there are well-evidenced management and treatment interventions for use in early childhood available through NHS services.
Currently, thousands of children are born every year in the UK with a rare but treatablegenetic condition. The study will usewhole genome sequencingto look for raregeneticconditions in newborns, enabling treatment to begin sooner.
The study is being funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, with support from the Genomic Medicine Service Alliances (GMSAs).
The study will explore the benefits, challenges, and practicalities of offering whole genome sequencing alongside the existing heel prick to all newborns to accelerate diagnosis and access to treatments for rare genetic conditions.
This is a newly established role which ensures that babies and their families who receive a 'suspected condition' result from the research study have a smooth handover to the NHS for confirmatory testing and, if required, to the relevant care and support pathway. The role is critical to ensure that diagnoses in babies are confirmed and families referred quickly to an appropriate treating clinician, in order to maximise potential impact on these babies' clinical outcomes and in some cases survival.
Main duties of the job
Based at regional level (mapped to the 7 NHS GMSA regions), each Regional Results Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining a list of relevant specialists within the region and contacting specialist teams urgently to inform them of a 'condition suspected' result. They will also follow-up with the relevant specialist team to ensure the result has been provided and to collect data on outcomes of further testing to support evaluation of the study.
Regional Results Coordinators will also be involved in liaising with screening laboratories where a result relates to a condition looked for in the NHS newborn screening test, to ensure correlation of results and liaison with team managing standard of care results. They will also work with patient support networks. Where required they will support the specialist teams in providing support to parents through the return of results process.
