Job OverviewThe Occupational Therapy service at Great Ormond Street Hospital have a unique opportunity available for an experienced occupational therapist to work in the multidisciplinary team for the Rare Bone Service. As this is a new post as part of a pilot project, we are looking for someone to lead on the development of the occupational therapy role within the service who can work independently and has the ability to demonstrate initiative. The post holder will provide support through specialist assessment, treatment and advice, for children and families where there is a diagnosis of a rare bone disorder. The post holder will use expert clinical knowledge and reasoning to support colleagues both in GOSH and externally in the ongoing management of children with these conditions.
The post-holder will join our large established Occupational Therapy team which has 33 occupational therapists and support workers working across the hospital. Main duties of the job
The Rare Bone Service has been established to support patients aged 0-18, who present with metabolic bone disorders, this will primarily be in Achondroplasia and Skeletal Dysplasia although children with other bone conditions such as inherited rickets, osteopetrosis and fibrous dysplasia may also be referred. The post holder will take the lead role for occupational therapy in this new service which has a strong multidisciplinary focus and includes physiotherapy, psychology, nursing and medical colleagues. There is close working with the occupational therapists from GOSH's orthopaedic, spinal and osteogenesis Imperfecta service, as well as our community colleagues.
Key areas include:o First point of contact for newly diagnosed babies and children.o Outreach visits to neonatal units / hospitals to support families on daily management and advise local teams.o Advising on development, activities of daily living play and mobility and in the context of a life-long condition.o Advice at times of change e.g.: entry to nursery or episodes of surgery.o Supporting local therapy colleagues to meet the ongoing therapy needs of our clients particularly those who are more severely affected and require ongoing support.o Participating in innovation and research activities pertinent to occupational therapy in rare bone disorders
