Job summary
The Chief Engineer will be primarily responsible for supporting members of the Senior Leadership/management Team in the leadership and management of the Estates Engineering functions including, but not limited to, the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance and associated engineering services in relation to the buildings and grounds and all the engineering infrastructure, across the whole of the large and complex Trust estate. This will be based upon professional and technical excellence and sound principles of management including Risk Management in the delivery of quality healthcare.
In particular they will support the Head of Estates in overseeing GOSH maintenance and associated engineering, whilst also having oversight of the estate backlog maintenance programme, and working with the Projects team to ensure delivery of the identified schemes. The Trust's estate engineering support services providing efficient operation and by association, the efficient and effective operation of all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment installed in support of the clinical delivery, are key elements of this role.
While overall responsibility for the continued safe operation of the estate sits with the Executive Director of Space and Place, the Chief Engineer will have day-to-day oversight of the granular detail that provides assurance of safe and effective outcomes when measured against a combination of national standards and locally agreed quality metrics.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for monitoring the estates department's operational efficiency along with measuring compliance against the national safety standards and regulatory procedures as set out in NHS England Estates Technical Guidance (including HTM's and HBN's) and the Health and Safety at Work Act etc.
The post holder will regularly monitor the performance of the maintenance programme across the GOSH estate, while supporting the ISO quality management system vison and outcomes. Additionally, the Chief Engineer will support the development of the estates staff training programme to ensure the current and long-term competencies are available to support both the Trust objectives and the estates strategy.
