Job summary

Full-Time (37.5h a week - On-call & Saturday half day work may be required)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and talented scientist to join the Histopathology Team, within the Paediatric Laboratory Medicine Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH).

GOSH is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care; and it provides the widest range of paediatric services of any hospital in the UK. Our purpose is to advance care for children and young people with complex health needs so they can fulfil their potential (https://www.gosh.nhs.uk/about-us/our-strategy/).

The Histopathology department comprises a consultant-led team providing a comprehensive tissue-based Paediatric diagnostic service that includes:

  • Paediatric pathology
  • Neuropathology
  • Muscle pathology
  • Metabolic disease pathology
  • Autopsy (including perinatal post mortem)

The role is to assist in the provision of specialist paediatric pathology services, which encompasses a wide variety of specialist techniques in: Specimen Reception, Tissue Banking, Dissection, Cryotomy, Microtomy, Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry, Electron Microscopy, Enzyme Histochemistry, and specialist techniques for renal, cardiac and muscle biopsies. The post holder will take part in a rotation through the different sections, as required, to provide an efficient, effective and high-quality service.

Main duties of the job

The departmental strategic plan includes expansion of our specialist services and we are looking for an experienced, creative and innovative scientist who will help us to implement new techniques, working practices and train staff. You must have proven experience in delivering quality assurance, via a quality management system, which is compliant with regulatory requirements such as ISO: 15189 and also have been involved in continuous quality improvement processes.

We are an IBMS approved training laboratory and offer improvement opportunities, staff benefits and a genuinely supportive working environment. Our staff come from a huge variety of backgrounds and we all benefit from the wide range of experience they bring.

In summary, the work of the department is highly specialised, complex and diverse and we are constantly striving to improve. Therefore the post holder will be required to gain and then maintain a wide range of skills, knowledge and technical expertise as well as continue to learn and develop. Furthermore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate leadership and management skills for the sections where they are rotated.

To apply, you should be a HCPC registered biomedical scientist with the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for histopathology. We are committed to attracting and retaining the best pathology staff so if you are looking for a new challenge, while helping us to achieve our vision, then we would be very happy to hear from you.
