Job summary

We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic Porter to join our Estates team here at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The role of Porter is many and varied. Working as part of a team, you will be responsible for providing a portering service transporting patient, furniture removal and ensuring a seamless delivery service to several key departments including the post room, food delivery, sterile services, and other areas across the Trust.

You will help directly with supporting patients moving to and from their appointments through the hospital, often when they are at their most vulnerable. Your reassuring and friendly demeanour can really make a difference to the patient experience.

Additionally, you will perform a variety of other duties such as delivering urgent blood products, the transportation of linen, removal of domestic and clinical waste, postal services, security duties and so on.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder is required to provide a collection and delivery service for the Trust as directed by the Operational Head of Portering or their deputies. The provision of service includes items such as, beds, cots, furniture, equipment, food, liquids, milk feeds, X-Rays, specimens, blood and blood products, refuse, post, linen, medical gas cylinders, luggage, patient medication, supplies, etc
  • The safe collection and transportation of patients around the Trust, taking due care, and ensuring trolleys and wheelchairs are clean and stocked up with medical gas cylinders and linen where appropriate
  • To collect blood and blood products from the Blood Bank and deliver to appropriate areas, following national guidelines and dealing with spillages if required
  • To check and assist wards in the supply of their bed/cot requirements and where necessary deliver collect beds and cots
  • Aid ward clinical teams in the transportation of a deceased patient to the Mortuary
  • To deliver stock and non-stock items, cages and pallets to wards and departments as instructed by the Portering Management team.
