Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Opthalmology (ST6+)
Applications are invited for a position at Great Ormond Street Hospital to commence from 1-FEB-2024, fixed-term for 12 months.
Candidates must have experience in paediatric ophthalmology.
Great Ormond Street Hospital
Specialist clinics in paediatric cataract, retina genetics, paediatric corneal and external disease, craniofacial anomalies, periocularhaemangiomas, complex strabismus, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology and paediatric oculoplastics/orbit. The successful candidate will also get exposure to visual electrophysiology, ultrasound (conventional B scan and high frequency) and OCT.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties
Each fellow spends four months on each of the three clinical teams. Each fellow has 6 outpatient clinics, 1 or 2 theatre sessions, 1/2 research sessions and 1 or 2 ward referral sessions per week.
Theatre sessions will provide you with experience assisting at complex procedures including corneal grafting, glaucoma, infant lens implantation and oculoplastic procedures and ,depending upon your previous surgical experience and skills , you will undertake paediatric cataract and strabismus surgery under consultant supervision.
You will be expected to arrange, with the support of clinicians assistant and clinical nurse specialist, the operating list & perform medical clerking and admission. You will be responsible for seeing the patients post operatively after theatre on the day and the next morning and prescribing their medications and writing a discharge summary.
In the outpatient clinics you will have 6 patients per session booked onto your own clinic. You will be expected to work up the patient (a complete eye examination including refraction) and present the case tothe consultant in charge of clinic. You will be required to dictate a letter on every patient within 24 hours of the clinic session.
During ward referral sessions you will see inpatients that have been referred for an ophthalmology opinion as an emergency by their medical team. These patients must be discussed with the consultant in clinic.
