Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for Clinical Psychologist within the Psychological and Mental Health Services (PAMHS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The post sits within the Surgery and Development Stream. We are a friendly and welcoming team, that values supporting each other. We provide psychological input into a wide range of specialities including orthopaedics, spinal, general surgery, cleft, dental, audiology, max fax, chronic pain, cochlear implant, audiology, renal and plastics. Clinical work is really interesting and varied and includes a mix of inpatient and outpatient work. We are also developing a rolling programme of group interventions for our patients, which the post holder will be integral to. They will also be particularly involved with the Cleft service and General Surgery.

Common areas for psychological work include: adjustment to physical health condition, treatment adherence, procedural anxiety and preparation for procedures, identity and appearance-related or body-image concerns, managing pain, anxiety and low mood related to health condition, and managing symptoms.The role involves close MDT working and liaison.

There are lots of opportunities for learning and development across the department and wider hospital, such as attending SIGs or getting involved with service projects or research. We offer placements to Undergraduate Placement students and Trainee Clinical Psychologists so there are always opportunities for supporting these placements.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will ensure the systematic provision of high quality clinical psychology services to patients and families referred into the Surgery and Development stream. They will work very closely with medical, nursing and allied health professional teams. They will be required to provide evidence-based psychological and developmental assessments, make recommendations to inform decision-making in relation to diagnosis and intervention, and extensive consultation to professional colleagues and other agencies involved in the child's care. Whilst the post holder will be expected to work across the range of specialities covered by Surgery Development, there will be some specific responsibilities within the Cleft and General Surgery services.

The development of working relationships and pathways across the sector is encouraged, with excellent opportunities for continuing professional development. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the flexible delivery of psychology services across the Trust, in response to new developments and organisational changes.

The post holder will also be expected to work flexibly within PAMHS, including carrying out clinical work in other specialties according to service need. The successful candidate will join a large, supportive team of psychologists working across GOSH and will be able to access the learning and opportunities that come with being part of a large psychology service at a leading children's hospital.
