Job summary
This post provides an exciting opportunity to develop skills and knowledge across a general Adult inpatient caseload .The post involves sessions within Kettering General Hospital on the acute medical wards (Wte 0.8), and at Northampton General Hospital (WTE 0.2)
The post holder will independently manage a caseload receiving and accessing support and supervision from senior colleagues
You will be assigned a mentor and aim to complete your NQP competencies within the first year. We promote attendance at bi-monthly countywide adult SLT meetings and specialist clinical forums. All staff are encouraged to become members of Special Interest Groups and we have a strong culture of clinical supervision.
Ideally you will have relevant undergraduate experience of working in the acute setting and have a keen interest in dysphagia and communication impairment within the acute settings. In-house dysphagia training and competencies will be provided, with the opportunity to complete an accredited post graduate Dysphagia Course.
You will supervise students with support and will work alongside SLT support practitioners, rehabilitation assistants and volunteers when required. You will be required to work with members of the multidisciplinary team and will participate in the development and delivery of training to others.
Main duties of the job
To assess, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment.
To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication and/or feeding and swallowing disorders.
To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
To contribute to clinical teams both multi-disciplinary and uni-disciplinary by discussing own and others input around clients' needs, ensuring a well-co-ordinated care plan.
To communicate complex condition related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions.
To work closely with clients, carers and families, agreeing decision making relevant to the patient/client management.
To demonstrate empathy with clients, carers and families and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.
To develop skills in motivating clients and/or carers to engage in the therapeutic process.
To develop negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of situations.
To form productive relationships with others who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties.
To employ excellent communication skills.
To keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good practice.
