Job summary

The Specialist Dental Service offers countywide Special Care Dentistry and Paediatric Dentistry across Northamptonshire.

Dental care is delivered across 5 sites providing a number of adjuncts to facilitate access for patients including mobility equipment, clinical holding, nitrous oxide and benzodiazepine sedation. In addition to this, the Specialist Dental Service also provides Intermediate Minor Oral Surgery that cannot be managed in general dental practices, an Oral Health Promotion Service and works collaboratively with the two acute hospitals within the areas to provide care under general anaesthetic.

Purpose of the Job

  • To provide clinical and team management of the Dental Nursing and administrative staff, to support the delivery of clinical services within the Specialist Dental Service.
  • To work collaboratively with the Clinical Lead and the Dental Nurse Manager to provide Senior Leadership to the service, co-ordinating service delivery and ensuring that the Specialist Dental Service is delivering high quality care that is safe and effective whilst in line with national standards and the commissioning arrangements in place.
  • To provide operational day to day management of the dental service including oversight of budgets, first line management of HR process and submission of reports in relation to performance, quality & risk.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary

  • To provide a comprehensive clinical leadership & operational management function relating to service delivery including budget oversight, management of first line HR issues and performance, quality & risk issues, taking remedial action where necessary.
  • To provide professional leadership and oversight of practice to the Dental Nurse team, provide supervision and develop clinical skills within the dental nursing team.
  • To support maintenance of high standards of dental nursing within the Specialist Dental Service including decontamination, cross infection control, clinical audit and other governance processes related to dental nursing.
  • To support and promote a learning environment within the workplace, including identification of training needs for Dental staff and to oversee student placements within the service.
  • To liaise with Clinical Lead, Dental Nurse Manager and Service Manager to ensure that staffing and governance processes reflect the needs of staff and the service
