Job summary

Do you live locally and want to be a dietitian but don't have a degree? If so, the dietetic apprentice route could be for you! If you have a level 3 qualification, good communication and organisational skills the apprentice route is perfect for you. The apprentice is delivered over 3 years and the university component is provided by Sheffield Hallam University but is done remotely on one day/week. You would need to be comfortable with learning virtually. You would have 4 days learning on the job which would be supported by the dietetic team in the trust. This would involve working with inpatients at Northampton General Hospital, Kettering General Hospital and in community hospitals, outpatients and community work including home enteral feeding. You would be working with both adults and children. You would be paid at band 3 and then band 4 in your final year. A car driver is preferred but not essential, but you need to be prepared to move between our bases at Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital.

We are looking for a motivated individual who has experience of working with the public, is a team player, is organised and has good communication skills. If you were successful, the apprentice would start in March 2023. The apprentice can only be delivered full time (part time hours not considered).

Main duties of the job

Off the Job Learning Hours (paid)

You can expect to spend 20% of your time learning off the job. This will equate to attending university online learning or private study one day per week with mandatory full-time placement blocks in years 1 and 2

Your clinical placements will provide a variety of learning environments within NHFT and external organisations to gain experience in the different areas of the local healthcare service . You must complete and pass academic modules and clinical placements to progress through the programme. An End Point Assessment must be passed to graduate as a dietitian.

On the Job Hours (paid)

You can expect to spend 80% of your time learning whilst working, equating to working for the remaining four days per week.

You will work as a fully integrated member of the nutrition and dietetic team. As you progress through each module of the degree programme your learning will be mapped and the scope of your working role will expand accordingly.

You will be expected to undertake mandatory training as well as participate in work-based learning opportunities to develop dietetic skills whilst working. Allowing you to put theory into practice in the workplace.

Study in own time (unpaid)

The apprentice is expected to undertake significant amounts of study in their own time such as completing further reading, essays and module assignments. You will be responsible for purchasing books and study materials as required.
