Job summary

As the Band 6 Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Specialist (SCIS) you will take a key role in the delivery of the acute outreach and admission service and continually look for new and innovative ways of improving the service and the patient's experience. As a registered, accountable and autonomous nurse/physiotherapist you will act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions. You will be responsible for liaising with referring clinicians, families and the patients with newly diagnosed spinal cord injury (SCI). The role will include offering advice, support and educational input to the above.

You will support the acute outreach and admissions lead and, in their absence, to take responsibility for the acute outreach and admissions service ensuring there is ongoing communication regarding the management of patients with newly diagnosed SCI.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide continuing expert care for a group of patients with SCI. Communicate effectively, listen to clinicians, families and patients ensure their views are heard.
  • Provide and receive complex and sensitive information which may require reassurance, tact or persuasion. Recognise where there are barriers to communication and work to establish effective communication within the multidisciplinary team. You will be required to communicate effectively
  • You will demonstrate effective leadership skills at all times and have the courage to challenge performance, practice, attitudes and behaviours that breach the principles of the Trust values and beliefs, the Trust policies, the NMC and HCPC Code of professional Conduct.
  • Work within Trust policies to maintain confidentiality of verbal and written information obtained in the course of duty and ensure that any disclosure is consistent with statutory requirements and Trust policy
  • Monitor SCI specific care for acute spinal cord injured patient in the different referring hospital, ensuring appropriate, specialist advice and support is delivered with competence, kindness, compassion and respect. You will be mindful of standards at all times, manage concerns, challenge poor practice and communicate concerns to relevant health care professionals
