Job summary
The role is for a middle grade level doctor, who has experience in leading a shift in the Emergency Department. We offer support for a portfolio pathway and offer secondments to allied specialities for completion of the required competencies for CESR.
The Department covers a large geographic area and sees over 48,000 new patients per year. It receives the full range of Emergency patients, with Paediatric patients making up approximately 25% of the total. Salisbury is a designated Trauma Unit linked to UHS as our nearest MTC. There is a large military population utilising the Salisbury Plain Training Area and living in the area with their young families and this is set to grow over the next 2 years with a new military town being developed.
The hospital has all DGH specialities including acute medicine based on AMU, paediatrics and daytime interventional cardiology. Overnight surgical work is covered by a pooled junior doctor rota supported by critical care outreach. Anaesthetics, medicine, O&G and paediatrics all have registrar presence overnight.
Salisbury ED is recognised as one of the top performing ED's in the region and benchmark in the top 10 nationally against a number of clinical and non-clinical standards. They will be allocated an ED Consultant Clinical Supervisor who will be able to offer advice on how best to use this allowance in terms of continuing professional development, individual training requirements, MLE and clinical audit etc. Education, training and development is made available to all staff and is actively encouraged.
We actively support the portfolio pathway and can offer secondments to allied specialities to gain the required experience.
Medical students are intermittently allocated to the ED and it is the responsibility of all ED staff to support them during their rotations. The appointee will also be encouraged to participate in formal and informal teaching of the junior medical and nursing staff via the ED induction programme, the H@NT training programme and simulation training.
There is a good library in the Education Centre at Salisbury District Hospital.
The post is educational. Seminars, CPCs and other postgraduate activities are provided. The post holder would be expected to attend educational sessions and in particular the specifically designed course for Junior Medical Staff, with protected time for education.
CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
The new appointment will be expected to be involved in audit, risk management, multi-professional working and service development where appropriate. Adherence to the principles of evidence based medicine in accordance with agreed protocols and guidelines developed in the speciality would also be expected. Annual appraisal and involvement in CPD is a mandatory part of the post.
The Clinical Governance framework in the Trust is focused around quality of care, including patient safety, clinical effectiveness and patient experience. This is designed to help individuals and teams to continually monitor and improve standards of care. It forms a central part of appraisal and revalidation of doctors. The framework includes the provision of six clinical governance half days, which aim to promote multi-professional working, and enable shared learning. There is no scheduled elective activity undertaken during these sessions and all doctors are expected to take part in the arranged activities. Each half day session is made up of a core and department agenda which cover all aspects of clinical governance patient safety, clinical audit, patient and public involvement, evidence based practice, clinical information / outcomes etc. A bimonthly clinical governance newsletter is also published.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT The Trust has an Education Centre close to the clinical areas and a library. Educational activities include weekly hospital rounds and regular meetings of the Salisbury Medical Society. Rooms are available for clinical departmental meetings. The Trust is committed to multi-professional education and to continuing professional development for all staff. A full range of additional training and development courses and opportunities are available both within the Trust and externally. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The Trust is committed to David Camerons (2011) pledge that every patient should be a research patient to help in the fight against disease. The Trust encourages all clinical staff to recruit patients to or host National Institutefor Health Research (NIHR) portfolio research and can provide infrastructure support. There are only 3 shifts 8-4:40 (Day), 2-10:30pm (Mid) Night (10-8.15).The rota is based on a rolling rota however this is just a guide and is annualised and published in 6 month blocks from August to end of Jan, and Feb to end of July. where you get to choose when you would like to work a set number of shits that would occur in a rolling 9 week rota. No more swapping out of nights to attend a wedding/ anniversaryjust tell the rota co-ordinator in advance and do the nights elsewhere. We have a flexible, training focussed rota with allocations made for SPA time to maintain own CPD as well as opportunities to take part in weekly teaching.
