Job summary

This post is a developmental role, and the post holder will be expected to work within the Plaster Room service, providing support to outpatient clinics and in patients who are in plaster casts.

Orthopaedic Practitioners work in the field of Trauma & Orthopaedic Outpatients. It is your job to apply casts to patients, at the doctor's request following an accident, for elective orthopaedic conditions and following trauma surgery. You will be expected to complete the British Orthopaedic Association British Casting Course as part of this trainee role and whilst you are training, your practice will be supervised at all times.

After a minimum of one year working in the plaster service, the post holder will attend a 5-week full time residential course at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore, Middlesex. On completion of the course and once in receipt of the British Casting Certificate, (60 credits at University Diploma level 8 SCQF equivalent to Level 5 NVQ, in working with a variety of casting material) the post holder will become a Band 4 Qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the nursing team, the Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner will be able to work with a variety of resin based and plaster of Paris casting material. You will be able to provide highly specialised, skilled care in the application, modification and removal of a wide range of casts, to both inpatients and outpatients, as requested and directly prescribed by medical staff under the supervision of a British Casting Certificate holder.

You will be responsible for giving direct care to patients. You will carry out procedures as appropriate to patient's needs. These duties to include, but not limited to, application of simple casts/braces, x-ray requesting after achieving specific competencies within the department and maintaining accurate records of your care.
