An opportunity has arisen for an experienced orthopaedic practitioner (Plaster Technician) or Registered Nurse who has a current British Casting Certificate to join the orthopaedic outpatient team at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.

All applicants are required to have a current British Casting Certificate, 60 credits at University Diploma level 8 SCQF equivalent to Level 5 NVQ, in working with a variety of casting material with evidence of ongoing professional updates relating to their practice. For this post, we require applicants to have at least 18 months practical post qualification experience in a plaster room environment which is equivalent to a graduate level of knowledge. You must be able to undertake extended role duties e.g. the removal of skin closures; removing stitches and staples for post-operative wounds after delegation from the medical team and show willingness to undertake our trust IR(MER) course, to complete x-ray imaging request cards under direct delegation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be accountable for all aspects of direct & indirect care of patients requiring casts/splints/bracing and wound care; providing high quality care and assistance to patients and their carer during their attendance to the department. The post holder will escalate to medical staff any complications or issues that may impact on the patients agreed plan of care.

The post holder will advise and support adult/paediatric patients and families in relation to managing their cast/splint/brace, on-going positioning and any complications to be aware of following interventions verbally and by producing written information.

The post holder will work autonomously within Trust and National casting guidelines reporting to Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

The post holder will be required to direct/instruct/supervise trainee orthopaedic practitioners and other clinical staff as appropriate i.e. medical and nursing, demonstrating high standards.

The post holders will work together to plan workload ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of resources on a daily basis supported by department manager/Sister/Charge nurse.

The current service is delivered between the hours of 08.00-18.00hrs Monday to Friday but may in the future include some evening and weekend working to cover service demand.

  • Good organisational skills with evidence of working independently and as part of the Plaster Room Team
