Job summary

This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic Plastic Surgery Department. The Department provides most areas of Plastic surgery and houses a supra-regional centre for Cleft Lip and Palate services, the supra-regional Burns Unit, and the supra-regional Laser Service. Attached to the Department and integral to the service is the Wessex Rehabilitation Centre which undertakes rehabilitation for patients who have experienced hand trauma

In addition to the aforementioned specialist services the Plastic Surgery Unit also undertakes a substantial volume of hand surgery (adult and children), lower limb, perineal, abdominal and breast reconstructive work, micro-vascular surgery and head and neck surgery with close links with Neurosurgical, Cardiothoracic and Gynaecological colleagues within the Southampton Hospitals.

We currently have 15 Consultants and you will work closely with a team of five junior trainees at F2/CT level and eight Specialist Registrars. You will be part of the out-of-hours 1:6 on- call rota for Plastic Surgery and a 1:12 Hospital at Night team.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsibility for the daily care of the ward patients working in co-operation with the registrars.
  • Routine admissions and emergencies to be clerked. Clinical notes to be maintained, clearly and accurately.
  • Attend the Emergency Department to review cases referred to the department.
  • Assist in the operating theatre wherever possible, when ward duties permit, and in post-operative recovery of patients following major Plastic surgery.
  • Attend ward rounds of the combined Plastic staff and of individual consultants, including the wards rounds with the Ortho-geriatrician.
  • Attend, where possible, out-patient clinics for formal teaching of regional examination and clinical injuries.
  • Encouragement will be given for junior doctors to carry out research if he/she wishes.
  • The post will participate in the Out of Hours on-call for Trauma & Orthopaedics on a 1:6 basis.
