Job summary

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery, fixed term 6 months

As the successful candidate you will undertake work within Colorectal, UGI, Breast and Endocrine surgery. Here at Salisbury a full range of benign upper GI and general surgical procedures are provided, predominantly laparoscopically. Our Theatres are well equipped with modern instruments and facilities and we have a separate Day Surgery Unit which is similarly of an exceedingly high standard.We also have a purpose built standalone Breast unit for 4-5 one-stop clinics with radiology support per week (dedicated mammogram and USS machines) where 3025 patients seen in clinic last year and 410 breast cancers treated. There are regular breast lists for breast surgery including sentinel node biopsy with intraoperative nodal assessment (OSNA) 2-3 lists per week.

General surgery patients are treated in Britford, Downton and Breamore surgical wards. The recently designed 6 bedded Surgical Admission Unit on Britford ward is for rapid assessment of acute and ambulatory patients prior to admission.

Main duties of the job

As part of this role some of the clinical duties are as follows:

Responsibility for the daily care of the ward patients working in co-operation with the registrars and FY1s and CT1s.

Manage and supervise routine admissions and emergencies. Clinical notes to be maintained, clearly and accurately.

Attend the Emergency Department to review cases referred to the department.

Assist in the operating theatre wherever possible, when ward duties permit, and in post-operative recovery of patients following Colorectal/ UGI/Breast and Endocrine surgery.

Attend ward rounds of the combined General Surgery Staff and of individual consultants.

Attend, where possible, out-patient clinics for formal teaching.

Encouragement will be given to carry out research if he/she wishes.

The post holder would be expected to attend educational sessions, with protected time for education if not on duty.

The post will participate in the Out of Hours on-call for General Surgery to be determined at appointment.

This post is fixed term for 6 months.
