Job summary

As a qualified Therapist, you will support patients at Step 3, offering face-to-face assessment and treatment sessions, and facilitating group therapy sessions. You will work in liaison with the Integrated Mental Health Team. You will also have opportunity to actively participate in different projects and workstreams.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work at HMP Huntercombe which is a prison housing foreign-national prisoners. Some will have complex, severe and enduring mental health disorders and serious risk behaviour, and also complex trauma responses. In course of their work, the post holder will encounter a range of presenting problems, including psychosis, personality difficulties, self-harm, challenging behaviour, substance misuse, complex emotional dysfunction (depression, anxiety, anger), PTSD, violence, sexual violence, cognitive deficits (including impairments of intellectual, memory and executive function), severe interpersonal problems and social disabilities. Histories of risk, antisocial and offending behaviour are possible. Many clients will have difficulties arising from physical, sexual and emotional abuse. The post holder will also work with the client's support networks, including care staff and family members.

Essential

  • Well-developed theoretical and practical knowledge of the field of psychotherapy.
  • Skills commensurate with highly specialist psychological therapist, in interventions and management techniques that are appropriate for use with complex presenting problems. Able to deliver established/evidenced based psychological therapy to fidelity.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialized psychological therapies in specific 'difficult to treat' groups (e.g., personality disorder, challenging behaviour, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc.).
  • High-level knowledge of the theory and practice of specialized psychological therapies.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified and registered with appropriate body, for instance HCPC, BACP, Nursing Midwifery Council.

Desirable

  • Post qualification training in psychotherapies such as psychodynamic, EMDR, NET.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of specialist psychotherapeutic assessment and individual and group-based treatment of clients in prison.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, with clients of all ages across the lifespan and of wide-ranging presenting problems that reflect the full spectrum of clinical complexity and severity.

  • Experience of working within a multicultural framework.
