Job summary

We are looking for an Orthoptist to develop and lead our new vision screening service for all 4-5yr old children in Oxfordshire.

You will be based within Oxfordshire and have the opportunity to create a new programme, working alongside a workforce experienced in screening young children. You will be responsible for training the workforce to deliver vision screening, devising, and assessing competencies, and leading the team to achieve the commissioning targets. Developing onward referral pathways and maintaining excellent communication with opticians and the ophthalmology department part of Oxford University Hospital Trust, will be an essential part of this role.

The post holder will work as part of the 0-19yrs Public Health Service team which includes school health nurses and health visitors. As well as being part of the wider children's services, with specialist supervision available from the Allied Health Professionals.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take an operational lead role in the development, planning and delivery of an effective child vision screening service for children aged 4-5 years in schools across Oxfordshire, with an emphasis on partnership working and integration. This includes leadership of the personnel delivering the screening, the care pathway and audit and quality assurance mechanisms. They will provide line management and clinical leadership for their designated team.

The testing of children may be either Orthoptist delivered specifically in special schools or delivered by a vision screener trained by a specialist orthoptist.

The post holder will also hold a specialist area of professional responsibility for the service countywide and will be instrumental in managing projects and leading pathways and programmes of work to enable effective delivery of this service whilst ensuring it is evidence based and consistently implemented countywide.
