Allen Ward is looking for enthusiastic, dynamic and confident newly qualified or a current Registered Mental Health Nurse to become part of the team on our female acute psychiatric ward.

The ideal candidates should be keen to further their experience and learning on a fast-paced ward providing the highest quality care, while working alongside a vast range of multi-disciplinary team such as Ward Consultant, Junior Doctors, Social Workers, Occupational Therapist, Peer Support Workers, Activity Coordinators, Physiotherapy Technicians, Ward Clerks, Matrons, Team Secretaries, Dietician, Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Registered Nursing Associates.

We offer a wide range of therapeutic interventions to the women admitted to our acute ward and pride ourselves on delivering exceptional care during the entirety of their stay.

What we are looking for in a Staff Nurse on Allen Ward:

As a part of the MDT you will be expected to demonstrate a professional, approachable and helpful manner towards both the patients on the ward, their families/carers, visitors and the wider MDT throughout the trust. We also ask that you actively support and involve yourself in the high standards of care that is being delivered on Allen ward, and challenge poor practice should you find it.

  • A qualified RMN with passion and drive for developing your clinical skills in a changeable environment

  • Be self-motivated and able to work autonomously as well as showing initiative and promoting new ideas on how to improve the service

Job responsibilities

Clinical Skills and Knowledge:

  • Develop effective and safe risk management plans alongside the patient, their families and the wider nursing team
  • Actively engage with the patients community team throughout admission to ensure a smooth discharge and transition back into the community from hospital
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of medication, side effects and any contraindications and the recommended dosage.
  • Actively engage patients and their loved ones with PALS service where appropriate
  • Assess's a patients progress on the ward through identification of changes in the patients health and social situation
  • Leading in morning handovers to the wider MDT, and in staff handovers between shifts
  • Liaising with other members of the MDT such a Physical Health Leads, PEACE Team, Pharmacy technicians where required
  • Provide clear, effective, up-to-date and accurate record keeping.

Leadership Skills:

  • Support the Ward Manager to implement the vision for inpatient care
  • Engage in data collection to support the Ward Manager in audit activity
  • Show capacity to contribute towards the overall containment of the ward
  • Contribute effectively towards service evaluation and supports clients engaged in such work
  • Act as a role model in the clinical arena for other staff
  • Provide effective supervision for nurses who have recently become registered with the NMC as well as HCAs

Co-ordinates the team during the shift to provide high quality nursing care by;

  • Taking account of the client need and allocating resources efficiently
  • Assessing the local environmental safety factors and taking immediate action to minimise and report potential hazards
  • Demonstrate effective time management and the ability to prioritise competing demands
  • Is confident and up to date with any recent policy changes, and implementing this on the ward and supporting colleagues where required.

Professional and Education / Training Skills

  • Keep up-to-date with legislation, evidence-based practice and has a clear understanding of good practice
  • Develop effective and supportive mentoring relationships with nursing students on placement on the ward
  • Show evidence of a commitment to lifelong learning through ongoing professional and career development
  • Follow professional guidelines and Codes of Conduct as laid down by the NMC
