Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a competent, confident, and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our Mental Health Inpatient team on a 14-bed functional and organic ward for older men.

You will work alongside another Occupational therapist and the Activity and Wellbeing Coordinator on the ward.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage a varied caseload which includes complex cases.
  • To provide occupational therapy that is evidence-based and follows client-centred principles. Occupational assessments and interventions will be completed as part of a multi-disciplinary team with a strong commitment to collaborative working, and focus on the provision of high quality services to individuals with cognitive impairments and other mental health problems. You will also support as part of the team to facilitate safe discharges to the community.
  • A commitment to core focus on mental health and specifically the assessment of occupational performance and the therapeutic use of occupation is essential.
  • To provide leadership for junior/non-registered staff as appropriate to the post, through supervision and appraisal, progressing to delegating responsibilities as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of the trust-wide Occupational Therapy service and local multi-disciplinary team.
  • To actively participate in the education of occupational therapy students.

The Fulbrook Centre has 2 older Adult Mental Health Inpatient Wards which includes Cherwell Ward and Sandford Ward. Sandford ward is a 14 bedded ward providing care to male older adults, providing acute psychiatric assessment and treatment for Oxfordshire patients with either a functional and/or organic illness.

Older Adult Acute In-Patient services are committed to working with people who are in an acute phase of mental illness. The service aims to provide the most effective treatment, which will promote the service users recovery and ability to return to their usual place of residence.

You are expected to actively support high standards of care delivery. As a member of the Multi disciplinary team you are expected to demonstrate necessary competences through a professional, approachable and helpful manner towards clients, their families and carers, visitors and colleagues throughout the organization.

Please note:

  • New starters have a 6 month probationary period. This, together with the induction process aims to create a positive supportive working environment allowing new employees to learn key elements of their role over a reasonable timescale.
  • Candidates not currently employed by the Trust who attend an interview for non-qualified Band 1-5 posts are required to undertake numeracy and literacy assessments.
