Job summary

The purpose of the Bucks Psychiatric Liaison Service (PLS) is to provide a liaison psychiatry service for patients in acute psychiatric states (psychosis, severe depression, dementia and delirium) presenting to the Acute Hospital Trust and where appropriate provide assessment, liaison and treatment advice so that patients will have their mental health needs met as well as their physical needs.

Main duties of the job

The Psychiatric Liaison team are a small, fun and well regarded Liaison team in Buckinghamshire. We provide assessments for those in mental health crisis in Accident and Emergency and throughout the Acute hospital- fancy joining us?

We strive for excellence in every assessment and will need you to be able to conduct psychosocial assessments for those in crisis and possess excellent risk assessment skills.

To be successful in meeting the challenges involved with the role you must be a skilled Mental Health Clinician who is enthusiastic, has strong clinical and risk management skills and must be able to work autonomously.

Along with crisis assessments within the hospital settings we also provide expert mental health advice, support and training to staff where it's needed. You must be able to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the care provided is safe, effective and of a high quality.

We are a strong little team who are currently working towards PLAN accreditation and want someone to join us in our journey who has proven team working skills.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, clear decision making capabilities, be a vocal advocate for the patient and have current knowledge and expertise in the care of patients with severe and enduring mental health issues.

Job responsibilities

To provide mental health provision in Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe General Hospital. To function autonomously and competently at Band 6 level when undertaking assessments, including managing volume and demand in the busy and sometimes challenging ED working environment and across the wards at SMH/WGH. Arrange and provide brief evidence-based psycho-social treatments for patients who have self-harmed. Support timely and safe discharge from the wards across SMH and for older adults admitted to WGH. This work will include working closely with the acute Trust to avoid unnecessary prolonged lengths of stay in the hospital environment, including avoidance of breaching referral to assessment time targets. Contribute to reducing unnecessary inpatient admissions to secondary care and to support and maintain appropriate care packages for patients as an alternative to admission.
