Job summary
This specialty doctor post has been created to support the development of the psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) service for adolescents. The post holder will work alongside the newly appointed full-time consultant.
Main duties of the job
The PICU unit will form part of the integrated inpatient service for adolescents. The Trust provides Tier 4 inpatient and other services for Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties commissioned by NHS England. Oxford Health is the lead provider for the Thames Valley Clinical Network New Care Model for Tier 4 provision, with Oxford Health 8 beds at this PICU. The other services include the Highfield Unit, Oxford, Marlborough House Swindon and Huntercombe, Maidenhead. The Highfield Unit provides 18 inpatient and day patient facilities for young people aged 11 - 18. The service works closely with the inpatient unit in Swindon ensuring most admissions are kept local.
The PICU unit is expected to be a busy service. The post holder will work with an experienced multidisciplinary team, which includes nursing staff, psychologist, social worker, family therapist and occupational therapist. There is provision for schooling school where the local authority teachers follow the national curriculum. It is expected that the PICU will attract a number of students, including medical students and students from other disciplines.

Job responsibilities
- Day-to-day management of the inpatients at the PICU, Meadow Unit, Warneford This will include contribution to ward rounds (including typing contemporaneous clinical notes into the electronic patient records), CPA review and discharge planning meetings, and Mental Health Act Tribunals. This will be under the clinical supervision of the dedicated inpatient consultants from the team. Liaison with the Community Mental Health teams (CAMHS) to ensure co-ordinated clinical care of patients.
- Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and discharge summaries using Trust IT and clinical records system training will be provided where needed.
- Work collaboratively with other agencies, in particular liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the The teams most commonly involved with this will be the GAUs Team, Hospital at Home and Day-Patient Teams, CAMHS Crisis and OSCA, Early Intervention Psychosis (EIS) and Local Authority/Social Services Team
- Active commitment to delivering the Trusts clinical governance agenda. Meadow Unit will lead its own governance agenda including audit, quality, patient experience, learning from incidents, patient safety initiatives and interrogation of The senior leadership team comprising of matron, consultants and ward manager will link with CAMHS management both in identifying areas of concern and feeding back actions, as well as area of excellence.
- Contribution to developing and delivering improved clinical services as outlined in the National Service Framework for Mental Health and in the CAMHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit Service Specifications.
- The post holder will be expected to contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit with appropriate administrative support.
