Job summary

The Trust is seeking to recruit for this joint Consultant Psychiatrist post with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Somerset Partnership Foundation Trust.

The successful post holder will join two dynamic and dedicated multi-disciplinary teams delivering high quality care, via a primarily consultation model, for young people who present with high risk of harm to others / involvement with the criminal justice system in the context of concerns regarding their mental health.

The post holder will be working across two regional Community Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (FCAMHS): 3 PAs with South West (North) Community Forensic CAMHS based in Keynsham that provides FCAMHS in Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and Gloucestershire; and South West (South) Community Forensic CAMHS based in Taunton that provides FCAMHS in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

Travel is therefore a key aspect of the role, but some remote working will also be possible.

Main duties of the job

The role for this innovative post which replaces two current part-time vacancies is 0.7 WTE.

The Post holder will be working in partnership with local multidisciplinary teams, a strong and supportive clinical network of Consultants underpinned by a culture of compassionate leadership who are committed to both staff development and job enrichment and other agencies to ensure clinical management of patients in relation to the Care Programme Approach (CPA).

This will include risk assessment and management, the assessment of the needs of carers, and the development of services to meet the needs of patients and families for which the teams are responsible.

Duties include assessments under Mental Health Act and 2nd on call psychiatric cover to all inpatient wards from Wessex House (adolescent) and adult psychiatric wards.

All FCAMHS clinicians work across the whole region rather than dividing the into sub-catchment areas. Joint working between two FCAMHS clinicians on a single case is common, particularly between a senior clinician and an assistant psychologist.

The diagnosis, management and treatment of children and adolescents who need consultant psychiatric intervention.

Provision of support to local CAMHS and other agencies regarding appropriate risk assessment and management in high risk cases involving young people presenting risk of harm to others.

Acceptance of medical responsibility for patients on his/her own caseload and the caseloads of other members of the teams under his/her supervision (particularly any junior medical staff). Medical responsibility in many instances will be shared with consultants working in local Community CAMHS (tier 3) teams.

Development of an active leadership role within his/her area of specialist competence in the catchment area for which he/she is responsible. This will involve the development of good relationships with senior professionals in CAMHS and other agencies, identification of gaps in provision for young people and a capacity for service development and innovation.
