Northampton General Hospital

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

The closing date is 01 December 2025

Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Paediatric Orthopaedics, complemented by skills in Adult Foot and Ankle Surgery, to join our dynamic Trauma and Orthopaedics team at Northampton General Hospital (NGH), part of the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group (UHN).

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the delivery of specialist orthopaedic care across Northamptonshire. You will play a central role in developing and leading paediatric and foot and ankle pathways, working alongside a talented multidisciplinary team that prides itself on innovation, collaboration, and high-quality outcomes.

The successful candidate will join a well-established, forward-thinking department with excellent links to the University of Leicester College of Life Sciences, providing opportunities to engage in teaching, research, and academic collaboration.

You'll be part of a clinically led organisation that values professional growth, work-life balance, and innovation -- big enough to offer complex, rewarding clinical work but small enough to care, support, and develop every consultant individually.

Main duties of the job

You will deliver consultant-led orthopaedic services across both elective and trauma pathways, providing expertise in paediatric orthopaedics and adult foot and ankle surgery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Running independent paediatric outpatient clinics and elective operating lists, including day-case and inpatient procedures.

  • Contributing to the management of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and supporting the Ponseti clubfoot service.

  • Providing complementary adult foot and ankle services to enhance the department's subspecialty coverage.

  • Participating in the trauma on-call rota (currently 1:12), ensuring high-quality consultant-led acute orthopaedic care.

  • Undertaking ward rounds, elective and trauma theatre sessions, and fracture clinics in line with the agreed job plan.

  • Supervising and mentoring junior medical staff, participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and contributing to audit, governance, and research activities.

  • Playing an active role in service development, clinical leadership, and the delivery of safe, effective, and innovative patient care.

This post provides the opportunity to make a real impact -- clinically, educationally, and strategically -- within a team committed to delivering excellence and advancing orthopaedic services across Northamptonshire.
