Job responsibilities

To work collaboratively with the Local Maternity and Neonatal Systems (LMNSs) to ensure that the parent voice is integral to all components of the EMNODN work plan.

To work collaboratively with the EMNODN Parent Advisory Group (PAG) to ensure that the parents voice is integral to all aspects of the work plan.

Provide support to, and deputise for, the Director/Lead Nurse, or the Education, Quality and Service Improvement Lead Nurse in their absence.

Support the Director/Lead Nurse with the delivery of Network key performance targets

Be accountable for the provision of effective professional nursing leadership.

Line management of the Care Coordinator team.

Clinical and professional responsibilities

Develop and promote a philosophy of family centred and FiCare across the Network and ensure this is embedded in every Neonatal Unit. In collaboration with local leads and teams, support the development of enhanced FIC to maximise parental involvement in the care of their baby during inpatient stays. Agree suitable strategies to ensure neonatal staff have access to appropriate teaching and education, focussing on FIC, and play an active role in this at local level, in agreement with the EMNODN work plans and priorities.

Work closely with the Director/Lead Nurse, Associate Director/Deputy Lead Nurse Network Clinical Leads, and Psychologist as part of the Network Management Team to ensure that professional guidance influences and supports the delivery of high quality family integrated care and PPI

Work collaboratively with the key Neonatal Unit leads and teams to agree appropriate EMNODN wide and unit based, clinical priorities for enhancing and maximising family centred and integrated care.

Support all Neonatal Units to work towards achieving BLISS Baby Charter accreditation in conjunction with the Neonatal Unit leads and teams, leading regional/Network-wide initiatives and collaboration, to share and spread best practice.

Support Neonatal Units to work towards UNICEF Baby Friendly status, linking and working collaboratively with local Neonatal Unit leads, and the wider midwifery teams.

Support and facilitate collaborative contact, discussions and work streams between EMNODN Neonatal Units, allowing them to develop and improve the provision of neonatal care at all levels across the whole Network.

Collaborate with the LMNSs to ensure that the outputs of the role are understood and supported at their level in line with their work plans and remit, which includes any relevant deliverables for the LMNSs from the NCCTR.

Work with, and alongside, a wide range of health care professionals and staff. These will include but not be restricted to:

- All eleven Neonatal Units within the EMNODN

- Multidisciplinary teams within the provider Trusts, including Nurses, Medical Staff, Allied Health Professionals, volunteers and others.

- Network Board

- LMNSs and Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP)

- Other ODNs and Clinical Networks

- National and Local Charities

- NHSE/I

- Professional organisations such as BAPM, NNA, RCPCH

Use the data available from the Neonatal GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time) quality improvement programme, and other local intelligence such as peer reviews to benchmark the available accommodation, facilities, resources and support available to parents and families during their babys inpatient care episodes across the Network, and identify any required improvements.

Collaborate with the EMNODN Management Team, NHS England, Specialised Commissioning, Provider Trusts, and parents to explore any possible funding which is available to enhance and improve the parent and family experience. Link with relevant local and national charities to explore further opportunities to maximise these improvements.

Monitor provision of suitable accommodation, facilities and support for parents and families. Escalate concerns if necessary to the Network Management Team in line with local protocol.

Work with existing parent/family support groups across the Network to ensure parental views and advice are embedded into neonatal care, and to inform appropriate Neonatal Unit/Network discussions and decisions.

Where parent and family support is absent or lacking, the post holder will explore the potential for establishing these, and work with Neonatal Units to agree a suitable model which ensures the parent voice is central to the Network work programme.

Signpost parents and families to existing appropriate parent support facilities. Establish links to a wide range of health care professionals, charities and organisations with a remit for this.

Play a key and active role at EMNODN management level, providing regular reports and updates to the Network Management Team on the agreed priorities and remit of the role.

Link, and network, at a national level with other ODN Care Coordinators to ensure effective peer support is available within the role, and appropriate communication takes place across existing and established ODN groups e.g. Network Managers/Nurse Leads/Data Managers, as well as providing a point of contact and expertise to relevant national bodies and organisations such as NHSE&I, Department of Health, professional organisations, charities and third sector organisations.

The post holder will maintain an active professional registration, abide by any appropriate Code of Conduct and ensure full compliance with revalidation requirements with an emphasis on appropriate updating of skills and knowledge appropriate and relevant to the post.

Adhere to the host Trust strategy, policies and procedures and promote the core values of both the Trust and Network.

Become familiar with each units policies and guidelines for practise/procedures and abide by and contribute to the further development of them.

Ensure confidentiality is promoted and maintained at all times commensurate with the role, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the Trust and ODN-wide polices as well as current legislation including GDPR and the Network data sharing agreement.

Educational Responsibilities

Help to develop, support and/or deliver ODN-wide training on family centred and integrated care to all levels as appropriate.

Work with the EMNODN to ensure that the content on the local Qualified Speciality in Training (QIS) and foundation courses reflects family centred and integrated developmental care, and be involved in the teaching of this.

Promote the development and remit/achievements of the Care Coordinator role via study day/conference.

Managerial Responsibilities

The post holder will be a key and core member of the ODN team, attending appropriate meetings commensurate with the role and remit.

Line Manage the Care Coordinator(s)

Attend appropriate provider Neonatal Unit based meetings, as required by the role and remit.

Help to identify the need for, and participate in, the development of appropriate new EMNODN guidelines, particularly focusing on standardising developmental and FIC across the Network.

Liaise with other Care Coordinators across England to develop a suitable group with agreed terms of reference, aims and objectives and appropriate links to other established ODN groups.

Undertake EMNODN wide evaluation on family centred and integrated care and the effectiveness of the post (including but not limited to parent/family and staff feedback) to help better develop the future direction of the post to make it more responsive to need.

To act as the parent and families advocate in all settings

Person Specification

Education, Training and Qualifications

Essential

• Current first level NMC registration as a Nurse/Midwife
• Qualified in Specialty - recognised qualification in neonatal care, e.g. ENB 405 or equivalent OR similar appropriate professional experience
• Minimum of four years recent neonatal experience OR appropriate professional experience
• Minimum of three years recent experience at a Band 7 level or above, OR similar appropriate senior professional experience.
• At least a 1st Degree in nursing or other health related topic.
• Master's degree or ability/commitment to undertake a health care related higher degree (MA/MSc) and complete within 4-5 years
• Knowledge of, and experience in, Developmental Care/Family Centred/Family Integrated Care
• Experience in parental support
• Track record of leading/developing family centred care

Desirable

• Teaching and assessing qualification, e.g. ENB 998/997 or equivalent
• Educational qualification, e.g. Cert Ed/PgDip etc
• Leadership course/module, or recognised qualification

Knowledge and experience

Essential

• Good knowledge of current neonatal nursing practice and professional nursing issues and associated professional attributes
• Evidence of up-to-date skills, and is clinically competent in current role
• Up to date level 3 safeguarding training
• Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of family integrated care and patient and public engagement and involvement
• Understands the principles of coproduction
• Evidence of specific work with parents and families
• Teaching, mentoring and assessing experience
• Extensive proven management and leadership experience
