Job summary

We are a dynamic and busy stroke service covering the whole of Northamptonshire which aims to support patients on their journey to live a meaningful and fulfilling life following their stroke, if this is something that interests you then read on!

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive person to join our Therapies Department at Northampton General Hospital, working within our inpatient Stroke Service as a Therapy Technical Instructor.

We are part of a very successful stroke pathway that covers Northamptonshire. We work in partnership with colleagues from community rehab beds and the Community Stroke Team to deliver a successful pathway for stroke patients. We provide regular training and have many other CPD opportunities available. Applicants will be expected to participate in audit projects and service development to maintain standards and meet national guidelines.

Applicants should have experience and or a desire to learn about stroke and will work alongside registered Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in both the hyperacute and rehabilitation setting. You will be expected to participate in our 7 day service, which includes Bank Holidays.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Actively provide therapy care for patients as part of the multi-disciplinary team at NGH.

Provide specific evidence-based assessments and treatments under the indirect supervision of registered therapists using a therapy framework.

Work with stroke survivors within the hospital.

Actively involved in departmental developments and governance.

Be an active member of the 7-day stroke working rota

Provide effective input into the work of the Trust, to support the achievement of our vision.

Contribute to the administration and day-to-day operation of the Therapy services.

About us

The post holder will be required to maintain constructive relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including but not exclusive to: Therapy Department and Enablement Centre clinical and non-clinical staff, Therapy Management Team and the broader trust staff group as required.

Participate in relevant working groups/projects, services and initiatives to provide information and analytical advice and expertise.

Job responsibilities

Implement and record planned programmed of care and comprehensive functional and mobility assessments of patients as directed by a therapist.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, members of the multi-disciplinary team, Therapy services colleagues and other agencies.

Assess and make recommendations for equipment, care provision and ongoing rehabilitation reporting these to a therapist.

Support patients through instruction and guidance in a range of activities, under the direction of a therapist, in the achievement of identified treatment goals.

Take an active role in home assessments and other therapy/treatment sessions alongside a therapist.

Provide advice to patients, their family, and carers, teaching and demonstrating the safe use of equipment or other techniques to optimise the patients mobility, functional ability, safety, and independence.

Build professional relationships with patients, their family, and carers, through use of communication, reasoning and negotiating skills, respecting others views, culture, and individuality.

Provide effective verbal and written reports to Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists and other multi-disciplinary team members relating to the patients performance and progress in their therapy interventions.

Respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of patients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.

Contribute to the Therapy Services governance arrangements and to the work of selected groups (e.g., Risk Management, Health & Safety) acting as a service representative on such groups where appropriate.

Contribute towards service development activities through participation in team meetings andservice development sessions.

Propose changes to processes and procedures carried out within own area of work to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Therapy services.

Participate in team/departmental audit and evaluation as agreed with supervisor.

Ensure work areas are clean, tidy, and well maintained, complying with Health & safety guidelines, ensuring the safe use of equipment and storage of materials.

Exercise good personal time management, punctuality, and consistent reliable attendance.

Submit accurate claim forms on electronic timesheets for weekends and additional hours worked.

Work flexibly across the week to include weekends, typically 1 in 6 weekends.

Notify the team leader of sick leave as soon as possible in line with Department and Trust policies.

In the absence of Therapy Technical Instructor colleagues through planned or unplanned leave, work flexibly to meet the prioritised needs of the Therapy services both within the team and across all service areas.

Comply with departmental guidelines for the safe use, care and maintenance of equipment and stock.

Take responsibility for the routine management of designated tasks in conjunction with Technical Instructor colleagues e.g., lease car maintenance, management of equipment orders.

Assist Therapy colleagues in the induction, training and education of other staff and students within the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy services.

Maintain accurate and up to date records of clinical interventions, consistent with legal and organisational requirements.

Collect, record, and submit accurate clinical and personal statistical data in line with departmental requirements and guidelines.

Participate in team meetings and in service training sessions.

Regularly attend and participate in team and Therapy service staff meetings.

Complete the required competencies for the role within agreed timescales and ensure competence remains up to date.

Identify own learning and development needs with guidance from Therapy colleagues, contributing to the production of a Personal Development Plan.

Compile an ongoing record of training and development activities undertaken, reflecting on, and recording learning outcomes of development opportunities.
