Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Speciality doctor post in Otolaryngology at Northampton General Hospital.
The new rota which is compliant allows plenty of time for further development and training. We have an active training programme and are part of the Oxford Deanery rotation for Higher Surgical Training in ENT. The department places emphasis on academics and the post holder will be encouraged to participate in research and audit.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will attend supervised theatre and clinic as well as have independent clinic and operating list. Part of the job plan will be flexible to provide cover for consultant/other middle grade leave. In addition to training in general ENT, Rhinology and Otology; the post holder will gain experience in Head, Neck and Thyroid/Parathyroid surgery. NGH is the regional hub for Head and Neck/Thyroid cancer treatment providing surgical service to a population close to 1 million covering Milton Keynes, Northampton and Kettering.
There are HD Flexible scope with monitors in all outpatient clinic rooms and recently upgraded modern instruments in operating theatre e.g. CO2 LASER, KTP Laser, Coblation instruments, Nerve monitor etc. Endoscopic Otology surgical procedures are routinely performed. In addition, specialist clinic e.g. One stop neck lump clinic, Voice Clinic, Combined cancer clinic are held every week. Weekly Head and Neck MDT are held on Friday and the post holder will be expected to attend this. Daily ward rounds are held to cover the 12 bedded Head and Neck ward.
The post holder will share day time on call with other middle grade doctors at NGH and out of hour on call as second on call for the region. A full complement of SHOs provide first tier on call and cover the head and neck ward and emergency ENT clinic.

The post holder will be based at Kettering General and Northampton General Hospital. The post has a minimum of 10 programme activities. There are training lists but priority is given to the 2 Specialist Registrars on the Oxford Specialist Training Rotation. There are also autonomous theatre lists. The post holder will join the second on call rota, which is a 1 in 8 rota. Working hours are from 08.00 18.00.
The post holder will join the ENT team and will be expected to attend daily ward rounds unless off or attending training in Oxford. There will be a mixture of autonomous and training clinics and theatre lists as set out in the job plan. The post holder will share the duties for the provision of tracheostomies for ITU patients with their fellow Registrars both at Northampton and Kettering General Hospitals.
To fully support the delivery and development of the Head and Neck Service.
To share responsibility for the service with the other Registrars/ Specialty Doctors supported by the Consultants.
To participate in the management of the Department of Otolaryngology.
To demonstrate a firm commitment to clinical governance including participation in effective clinical audit and continuing medical education.
To participate in all teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students and other hospital employees as required.
The agreed job plan comprises a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. Initially this consists of 8.75 direct clinical care PAs (including on call commitment which may contain up to 1 PAs activity) and 1 SPA. It is anticipated that the SPA activity will be monitored and reviewed once the candidate is in post to ensure that this activity is remunerated appropriately. The job plan is subject to annual review and mutual agreement with theClinical Lead/Director.
ON-CALL COMMITMENT
1 in 8 on call is shared with Registrars and Specialty Doctors from Northampton General Hospital, and Kettering General Hospital. There are three tier on call cover.
The on call team is based at Northampton General Hospital that is open to all emergencies throughout the week while Kettering General Hospital is closed for emergencies over the weekend.
Emergency admissions are at Northampton General Hospital.
