Job summary

The department offers specialist training in Laparoscopic Colorectal, Laparoscopic Benign Upper GI Surgery, as well as General Surgery. The successful candidate will work for 2 general surgeons at Northampton General Hospital (expected to be 6 months upper GI and 6 months colorectal depending on candidate's interests). We provide specialist colorectal services including surgery for cancer and benign disease (inflammatory bowel disease surgery including ileo-anal pouch surgery), in addition to benign Upper GI & Hepatobiliary surgery and laparoscopic repair of Complex Hernias.

This post is suited to ST3-ST8 level, who would like further training in general surgery to advance their career and enhance their CV. This is a service post, but clinical and surgical training will be provided to suit the candidate's needs.

The successful candidate will participate in the General Surgery Specialist Registrar full shift rota comprising of 12 registrar grades.

The contract is a fixed term post for 12 months and extendable depending on satisfactory performance. The successful candidate will be expected to have MRCS. Duties will include the full range of elective clinical activities (operating lists, endoscopy, outpatient clinics, ward rounds), and emergency care provision in General Surgery, with a 24-hour dedicated emergency CEPOD list.

Main duties of the job

Key Duties include:

  1. General surgery ward rounds
  2. General surgery theatre lists
  3. Outpatient clinics and endoscopy
  4. Being trained and supported in the development of operative skills
  5. Participation in Clinical Governance, including effective clinical audit, continuing medical education and mandatory training.
  6. Contributing to departmental audit and research with consultant supervision. Opportunities are available to undertake personal research and enhance the CV
  7. Participation in teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students (University of Leicester and University of Oxford) and other hospital employees, as required.
  8. Participation in General Surgery Full Shift Rota 1:12 covering General Surgery when on call.

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FULL Registration with the GMC with a Licence to practice
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS or equivalent

Desirable

  • BSc or MD
  • FRCS

Knowledge and Experience

  • Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent (24months rotational training)
  • General surgery operative experience evidenced by surgical logbook

Desirable

  • Previous clinical experience within the NHS environment
