Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to manage a small team of dedicated, hospital based new born hearing screeners taking professional and operational responsibility for organising the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP), in accordance with the policies of the National Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.

Main duties of the job

Close liaison with the diagnostic service provided by the Children's Hearing Clinic, the Trust other screening services as well as primary care, are all crucial to the success of the service.

This post, therefore would suit members of the Health Visiting profession, managers from primary care and applicants with experience of managing clinical teams.

To act as the professional lead for the day to day management, evaluation and quality assurance of the screening process including the provision of antenatal information, the screening procedures and any onward referral.

To ensure all parents of eligible babies are offered the Newborn Hearing Screen in a timely fashion.

Job responsibilities

To ensure the hearing screening programme is carried out as per national and local protocols and to write, review and update local protocols and procedures as and when necessary.

To promote the principles of a family friendly service by ensuring that parents and carers are given clear and accurate information regarding the hearing screening programme at all times.

To establish and maintain effective methods of communication to ensure that screening outcomes are delivered correctly to the parents, primary care teams, other Newborn Hearing Screening teams where appropriate and Audiology Services where follow-up is indicated.

To liaise with the national NHSP team and to attend regular updates and training events provided by the national team.

To keep the screening team and local professionals and stakeholders informed about national developments.

To liaise with other newborn hearing screening programmes to ensure that families receive a seamless screening and follow up service.

To liaise with relevant health professionals and other agencies in particular with local paediatric audiology services and Education Services for hearing impaired and deaf children.

To ensure all administrative and clinical information including test results are accurately recorded on the record sheets, the eSP database and in the screening equipment databases.

To ensure that all hearing screening data is archived securely

To carry out administrative functions and regular data quality checks within the eSP database as specified by NHSP national policy and guidelines.

To audit the programme regularly as required locally and nationally and produce written and statistical reports on request

To liaise with the local IT department and national IT system suppliers as required

To ensure arrangements are made for the routine calibration, maintenance and repair of all screening and technical equipment in accordance with NHSP national policy and local guidelines.

To maintain sufficient supplies of consumables and any other stock/non-stock items required by the programme and re-order as necessary.

To ensure that equipment is used in accordance with NHSP national protocols.

To establish and maintain an organised working environment for the screening team working on the postnatal wards, special care/neonatal intensive care units and other settings.

To be responsible for the recruitment and selection of screening team staff in conjunction with Trust line managers

To organise a full induction programme and participate in the training of new screeners in accordance with local and national policy.

To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the screening team.

To develop and continually assess flexible working patterns, including the management of shift rotas, in order to best meet the needs of the service.

To establish, motivate and develop the team and carry out regular competency assessments in order to provide performance feedback and to assist in the identification of individual training needs.

To update a Personal Development Plan for each Screener annually.

To ensure the screening team maintains confidentiality in the written and spoken word.

To assist in the management of staff and non-staff budgets associated with the programme.

To report and record all incidents or near misses as per Trust policy and to report such incidents to the NHSP national team in a timely fashion.

To comply at all times with local policies and procedures.
