Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, friendly and supportive team in a large district general hospital. The post holder is therefore required to have full registration with the General Medical Council & a valid licence to practice. It is a new post as per terms and conditions of service specialty doctor (England 2021), the post holder will work within the generic capabilities framework for the Specialty Doctor Grade.

This will be in accordance with the Generic Capabilities Framework for the Specialty Doctor Grade. This role is for an individual who has experience of ICU in the UK, ready to take on a more senior role in terms of management experience and running teaching programmes.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job

  • Participate in the Critical Care rota
  • Day-to-day clinical and managerial running of the critical care unit.
  • Handover of patients, ward rounds, clinical procedures, clerking, transfers, following up on investigations, documentation to maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients.
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of Intensive Care Medicine
  • Undertake any responsibility which relates to the agreed special interests
  • Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
  • Management of department including attendance at major ICU meetings
  • Take part in annual appraisals (This is mandatory for everyone. Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation).
  • Active leading of ward rounds, both directly supervised and with distant supervision
  • Active decision making, both on in-hours management of patients and out of hours
  • Leading major parts of the critical care teaching programme (Including journal club, ICU MDT teaching & the ICU foundation programme)
  • Participation in ICU follow-up clinic, leading national and local research, participation in higher management roles
  • Maintenance of standards on the ITU, including participation in training and induction of more junior doctors
  • Leading and running clinical MDT
  • Involvement in point-of-care simulation
  • Guidance of more junior staff with protocols, procedures and unit principles
