Job summary

We are looking to recruit Junior Clinical Fellows to the urgent care directorate, specifically within acute medicine at Northampton General Hospital to start in August, or sooner.

The posts are suitable for Doctors looking to gain acute medical experience prior to starting Internal Medicine Training, GP Training or before applying for ST3 posts.

NGH has a strong track record of nurturing trust grades towards further training. It is because of this success that we re-recruit each year and these posts are available now because we expect many of the JCFs currently working with us to be successful in their applications to Internal Medicine Training, GP specialist training and Higher Specialist Training.

Many of our consultants at Northampton general hospital are 'home-grown' NGH trained, and there is a hospital wide ethos of supporting junior doctors in developing their future careers.

Within Acute medicine at Northampton, we provide trainees with the opportunity to gain experience in multiple acute assessment areas, Working within the emergency department, same day emergency care and acute medical assessment wards.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside their ward team of Consultants, SpRs, SCF andother junior medical staff along with all other multidisciplinary health careprofessionals.

The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor andencouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the samelevel. This includes access to our highly successful Simulation Suite and to JCF -specific training in the Nye Bevan. The training programme is based on the JRCPTBIMT core curriculum and includes mentorship in applying for IMT, GPvST etc.We wish to appoint candidates with a good foundation in Medicine who are lookingtowards a career in Medicine, or who wish to broaden their experience before a careerchoice

Job description

Job responsibilities

We have two acute assessment wards housing over 65 patients collectively, Working on the wards provides excellent exposure to patients with a wide variety of acute medical problems, where you will gain invaluable experience.

The department has dedicated 7 consultants working across all areas. We have twice daily consultant led ward rounds across both wards. There is also a busy Same Day Emergency Care unit that is also staffed by the Acute Team.

Each doctor will rotate around the three areas in over the course of each year.

Each post will rotate around the two wards, the Emergency department managing the medical take, and same day emergency care.

These posts will take part in out-of-hours duties on the Nye Bevan Unit for some evening shifts and weekend days, on the acute medical take and also supporting the Acute Cardiologist.

These posts are to start before or on 4th August 2021, ideally with a shadowing period beforehand, and to run for up to two years.

Northampton General Hospital is a large DGH. Our A&E gets 120,000 attendances per year, and we have 20,000 medical admissions per year. We have a recently enlarged A&E, modern cardiac labs, and an onsite renal unit. We opened the Nye Bevan - our brand new purpose built Admissions Hub - in 2018 for assessment and initial management of most medical patients with very early consultant led review of attendees. We also have a fully functional SDEC for streamlined management of acute presentations that may not require admission.

ED Clerking - Managing the medical take of patients referred to medicine within the ED department. We have two consultants available to support with 1 registrar and multiple JCFs from a variety of specialist medical teams.

These posts will take part in out-of-hours duties on the Nye Bevan Unit and the ED for some evening shifts and weekend days, on the acute medical take and also supporting the Acute Cardiologist.

These posts are to start before or on 4th August 2022 ideally with a shadowing period beforehand, and to run for up to three years. We offer two-year contracts for visa purposes with the expectation that the successful candidates will remain at NGH for a minimum of one year.
