Job summary
This post offers a unique opportunity for highly motivated CT/MRI Radiographers to develop their imaging skills as part of a dedicated team in a busy yet friendly District General Hospital. Duties involve rotation through CT and MRI scanning.
The department has two 1.5T Philips Ingenia MRI Scanners.
There are three CT scanners, 2 Siemens Definition AS plus and 1 Siemens Xceed
It is essential that you are flexible and able to work a range of hours that includes long days, evenings and weekends according to the needs of the service. The MRI department is currently operating a 12 hour extended day service. The post carries an on call (for CT) and out of hours commitment.
Main duties of the job
Experienced MRI / CT radiographer to rotate through both modalities.
To ensure the safe, smooth day to day running of the scanners and to supervise junior staff / trainees.
To provide a high quality professional Diagnostic Imaging Service to all patients attending the Radiology Department.
To understand, communicate and ensure IRMER and MRI safety requirements are consistently met.
To communicate with other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive the appropriate level of care and treatment
To provide a Monday to Sunday service including long days and emergency CT on call.

Role and Responsibilities:
The postholder will act as a State Registered Radiographer and will participate in the provision of imaging services to a diversity of patient presentations in a range of clinical environments
The postholder will provide an excellent standard of radiographic imaging and quality of patient care
To undertake all MRI/CT procedures as specified by the Radiology Department protocols, working to a consistently high standard and ensures radiation doses are kept to a minimum using the ALARP principle and dose reduction factors; ensures adherence to MRI safety standards.
Makes autonomous decisions regarding the appropriateness of examinations as an aid to clinical diagnosis; works to a high standard of technique and patient positioning
Follows established examination protocols and liaises, as required, with Consultant Radiologists regarding optimum technique
Participates in the provision of the 24/7 out-of-hours services; is able to work alone and autonomously without direct supervision
Possesses the skills necessary to deliver services to patients with a variety of presentations including the unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, confused, those with physical &/or mental disability and those exhibiting anti-social or threatening behaviour
Is responsible for ensuring accurate patient records, including radiation dose and exposure factors
Uses the Radiology Information System (RIS) for patient registration, ordering and scheduling; records accurate patient information relating to dose and use of consumables
Uses the Picture Archive & Communication System (PACS) to ensure optimum image quality; reviews images and reports
Participates in the Quality Assurance equipment testing programme
Provides support and reassurance to patients attending the Radiology Department; is able to overcome barriers to understanding and is able to convey sensitive information in an appropriate manner
To ensure high imaging standards and to maintain the high level of patient care that currently exists.
Responsibility for the safety of patients and staff in the potentially hazardous magnetic field of the MRI Scanner.
To administer Intravenous Contrast or Buscopan under the prescription of a Consultant Radiologist or under patient group directives. To site Intravenous Cannulae for administration of Contrast media using pressure injector or hand injection.
Develops a Good understanding of the equipment used; is able to identify faults and accurately communicate information to the Superintendent Radiographer and/or engineers as necessary
Advise medical and non-medical staff on the safety of MRI scanning with regard to implanted medical devices, foreign bodies and patients requiring special care or monitoring.
To perform, manual handling duties that will include lifting/ moving patients, moving trolleys and chairs, moving/ lifting equipment/ other items following suitable manual handling training.
To be accountable for own professional actions and to act as a role model within the department, setting and maintaining high standards of professionalism and patient care and encouraging the development of a strong and flexible multi-disciplinary team.
Possesses specialist knowledge and experience as appropriate to grade; is able to function as a role model and provide support to Link Grade Radiographers, student Radiographers, Trainee Assistant Practitioners and RDAs within the Radiology Department.
