Job summary

At Northampton General Hospital we have an exciting opportunity to join our Finance Team.

We are looking for a Finance Manager to join our fast paced environment and support the financial management of staffing and health service budgets.

The post holder is expected to be CCAB qualified/finalist and to have previous financial management experience and be able to liaise and communicate with Directors and Executive leaders in the organisation.

Main duties of the job

The Finance Manger will be expected to

Support Senior Finance Managers and Heads of Finance to deliver financial information as part of the month end reporting

Produce accurate and timely financial reports and working papers, liaising with Senior Leader in the organisation on staffing budgets and expenditure and support vacancy management.

To support the technical aspects of finance and monthly national reporting templates.

Provide financial support and costings to managers within the organisation on Business cases and establishment reviews.

Job description

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES

Advises budget holders / department managers (non-finance managers) on complex, contentious and sensitive financial matters e.g. advising of overspends against budgets, explaining budget statements to non-finance managers.

Provides management accounting information:

Ensuring accurate finance system information is reported.

Ensures appropriate treatment where Tax / VAT rules may affect costs / income.

Ensures that all income is identified and invoiced in a timely manner; this will include discussions with organisations outside of NGH.

Delivers expert advice and has a specialist knowledge of all accounting areas through experience and qualifications.

Works across all relevant teams to achieve an integrated approach andmaximisation of benefits i.e. income team, contracting and coding team etc.

Resolves discrepancies and investigates variances to budget with budget holders.

Prepares monthly and annual budget statements, including quarterly returns in line with set timetables.

Responsible for correct and timely input and use of data into the financial ledger, including the reconfiguration and manipulation of data for users across the hospital. E.g. journal entries to move budgets and expenditure to different cost centres, all subject to audit scrutiny.

Assists in the development and implementation of financial information and develops plans and procedures in own area of work the result being to improve output across the trust. E.g. enhancing monthly performance and monitoring information produced for the Trust Board and budget managers.

Actively supports the directorates cost improvement agenda as well as the measuring and reporting of such schemes.

Responsible for authorisation of financial transactions and other documents. Is involved with the creation of budgets for directorates across the Trust.

Delegates work to junior staff and gives finance training to non-finance managersCreates and builds working spreadsheets and databases that comply with audit and other finance regulations.

Has a set of agreed objectives, which are worked to and has freedom to achieve this independently but within broad professional methods. Acts without referring to manager and as lead specialist in a particular financial area.

Is involved with accounting policies / procedures, redesigns and proposes changes to local accounting policies which will impact across the Trust.

Manages and copes with non-financial managers when discussing and explaining difficult and stressful financial problems / issues. This will occur most months following the production of monthly monitoring information.

Good concentration needed during the various tasks such as inputting data, reconciling, calculating, answering queries, must be able to multi-task. There will be times when analysing very complex data or preparing financial returns that long periods of concentration is required.

Comfortable in appropriately challenging performance in order to achieve set targets; comfortable in seeking action plans to be addressed to achieve such targets.

TRAINING

CCAB / CIMA qualified or equivalent plus 3 years relevant experience

OTHER

Continuing professional development is required by attending appropriate HFMA courses, learning on the job and being regularly involved with department activities.

Previous Management Accounting experience is required.

The ability to interact with non-finance professionals in what are sometimes difficult circumstances.

A working knowledge of Word and expert knowledge of Excel or other key spreadsheet packages.
