Job summary
The post is for the appointment of a consultant in Colorectal and General Surgery, to replace a colleague who is retired. The post holder will work as the tenth full time consultant surgeon in the Gastrointestinal Surgery team. Applicants will possess the FRCS Intercollegiate exam or equivalent and currently hold a CCT or CESR(CP) or be within 6 months of completion of CCT/CESR(CP) and have completed recognised training in colorectal and general surgery.
The prospective candidate should have a sub speciality colorectal interest that compliments existing skills and practice within the department particularly development of Robotic Colorectal Surgery and Capsule Endoscopy Service at Northampton General Hospital.
Extensive endoscopy experience required with JAG accreditation is essential. A higher degree with research interest would be desirable but not essential.
Specific training in laparoscopic colorectal resectional surgery for cancer and benign conditions is essential supported by surgical logbook evidence.
Main duties of the job
- To fully support the delivery and development of the Colorectal Service including Robotic Surgery and Colon Capsule Endoscopy.
- To share responsibility for the colorectal service with the other Consultant Colorectal surgeons, including the day to day responsibility for the management of urgent colorectal cases.
- To ensure full submission of data to the Somerset database, in line with national recommendations.
- To participate with the other Consultant Surgeons in the management of the Department of Surgery.
- To demonstrate a firm commitment to clinical governance including participation in effective clinical audit and continuing medical education.
- To contribute to management within the Trust through the Directorate.
- To participate in all teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students and other hospital employees as required. There is an introductory teaching programme for the Foundation doctors in Surgery and the Consultant would be expected to participate in this. Time commitment would be less than 1 hour per week. There is also some involvement in the teaching of nurses and health professionals involved in the care of colorectal patients. We accommodate students from both Leicester and Oxford medical schools thus providing teaching and support during their attachment at Northampton General Hospital.
