Job summary
The appointees will join our 4 existing SCF in AIM/GIM to complete a team of 7 middle grades who rotate 6-monthly around our Acute and General Medicine Wards. Two SCF each work on Hawthorn, Cedar and Holcot and one on smaller ward Victoria. Successful applicants to these posts may also take part in an on call rota for acute medicine at SpR or IMT3 level subject to their experience.
This post is suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in Acute and General Medicine who wish to gain further experience of the speciality either before starting Higher Specialist Training or to gain evidence and experience towards a CESR application. At NGH we are in the process of developing mentorship and support for doctors wishing to pursue the CESR route to Consultancy in AIM. These posts are also suitable for doctors wanting to further their GIM experience before taking up HST in any of the Class I specialities.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work alongside their ward team of Consultants, SpRs, junior medical staff and multidisciplinary health care professionals. It is expected that they will take a leadership role on their ward and together with their SCF colleague mentor and support their doctors in training and junior clinical fellows.
The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. This includes access to a departmental Ultrasound machine with opportunity for training and development in this area and support to develop as a clinical educator. The training programme is based on the JRCPTB core curriculum for Acute Medicine but will be specifically tailored for each trainee to complement their specialist training to date and ensure the programme meets the educational needs of the appointee.
We wish to appoint candidates with a good background in general medicine committed to a career in of Acute Medicine, or who want to increase their confidence in AIM before embarking on Higher Specialist training in one of the Group 1 Medical Specialties.

The Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is situated within walking distance of the town centre and is the designated major accident and emergency centre in the district providing a full range of acute services. It serves a population of approximately 400,000.
On-site specialities include General Medicine, Paediatrics, ENT, Accident and Emergency, Intensive Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Rheumatology, Plastic surgery, Dermatology as well as General and Orthopaedic Surgery. The X-ray Department is adjacent to Accident and Emergency and its facilities include diagnostic ultrasound and CT and MRI Scanning. There is a direct link between the CT Room and the Neurosurgical Department at the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH), Oxford to allow rapid exchange of information and advice
Northampton General Hospital is a large DGH. Our A&E gets 120,000 attendances per year, and we have 20,000 medical admissions per year. We have a recently enlarged A&E, modern cardiac labs, and an onsite renal unit. We opened the Nye Bevan - our brand new purpose built Admissions Hub - in 2018 for assessment and initial management of most medical patients with very early consultant led review of attendees. We also have a fully functional ambulatory care centre for streamlined management of acute presentations that may not require admission.

The post will be based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust where the successful candidate will join the expanding Acute & General Medicine team, with opportunities for learning and development under the supervision of the consultant team.
It is expected that the successful candidates will take part in unselected medical cover either on the 20 strong MedReg rota or the IMT3 rota. There may also be opportunities for weekend work in AIM on the Nye Bevan Acute Assessment Hub.
The majority of training will be on-the-job with close involvement of the consultants. The department has a weekly lunchtime teaching session and there will be opportunity to develop as an educator through support and training of junior colleagues.
There is a purpose-designed teaching programme for IMT3 and SCF covering generic skills and all the more challenging Acute Medical Presentations
The Directorate of Medicine has Internal Medicine Core Training on Wednesday afternoon with an extensive program of specialty interests and topics across the whole range of general medicine; Junior Doctors are encouraged and supported to take part in clinical case presentations.
In addition we offer dedicated patient safety lectures and practical training on procedures such as ultrasound guided CVP insertion. We have a state-of-the-art Simulation department who provide sessions both to doctors in training and those in Clinical Fellowships. The full programme provides junior doctors with a comprehensive training package.
