The post-holder will work across all aspects of the service.
There is close supervision by consultants and other appropriate specialist colleagues.
About us
The department of Geriatrics manage two short stay elderly wards Brampton and Knightley (27 and 21 beds each), a dynamic 4 bed frailty assessment area for same day emergency care, an 8 bed short stay frailty Unit, Orthogeriatric service (approx. 27 beds).
This is an exciting time for Northampton General Hospital as we have recently opened a Frailty Assessment unit in Eleanor ward consisting of 12 beds. We have a frailty team consisting of consultant geriatrician, registrar, junior doctor, specialist frailty nurses, physiotherapy and occupational therapy and pharmacist.
The team identifies suitable frailty patients to be transferred from A&E to the more appropriate environment of the Frailty assessment unit, where a comprehensive geriatric assessment is carried out. Where possible, patients are discharged the same day; when this is not feasible, we transfer them to our 8 bed short stay frailty area (if we predict a length of stay of <72 hours).
The team works closely with the Intermediate care team and Crisis response team to facilitate safe discharges by providing community therapy and nursing services and quickly implementing care packages when necessary.
The outpatient area runs clinics for TIAs, Stroke, Falls, Parkinson's disease, General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine.
