Job summary
Northampton General Hospital has a well-established diabetes and endocrinology service, operating from a dedicated Diabetes Centre. This is an additional post to augment a young and dynamic diabetes and endocrinology team. The post will include an GIM on call commitment (likely to be based as "hot week in EAU", subject to redesign), joining the existing 24 physicians on the on call rota. The post has 10PAs (up to 12 PAs subject to negotiation).The successful applicant will join a well established diabetes team comprising 7 consultants, 5 inpatient diabetes specialist nurses and a clinic nurse. There is input from a specialist diabetes dietitian and there has been recent agreement for some psychologist funding. Members of the team are DAFNE trained. There is a specialist diabetes podiatry team (led by a consultant podiatrists) and the team runs weekly Foot clinics with podiatry as well as monthly MDT foot clinics with vascular surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons with a specialist interest in diabetic foot disease. The hospital based diabetes team has close links with the community multidisciplinary diabetes team and the responsibility for leading this service will lie jointly between the diabetologists at Kettering and Northampton.Specialist clinics are held for new patient and follow up diabetes, insulin pump, renal, foot and young adult in addition to transition clinics.
Main duties of the job
Suggested timetable: Each post will have approximately the same numberof clinics and ward rounds as listed below, but the activities may beallocated to different days of the week. The shape of the week variesdepending duties such as ward cover or on-call. Three timetables for thesedifferent scenarios are therefore provided with an overall summary ofduties per year and for an average week:
Consultants in diabetes and endocrinology contribute to the acute take on a 1:13 basis. During theweek this means a 'long day' of take admissions from 8:30 to handover at 9pm (completed by9:30pm). Every second 'long day' includes overnight availability (1 in 26). At weekends there is alsoward cover duty for the admission wards shared between medical consultants. This involves a 4hour admission unit ward round (8:30am to 12.30). Overall there are 7 to 8 weekend days a year of'full' on-call work (long days) and the same number of 'short' (4-hour ward round) days. The teamis in the process of amalgamating these into 7 weekends (3-4 'long' plus 3-4 'short') a year. Theadditional hours worked due to on-call duties (beyond the 40 hour weekly commitment of a 10 PArole) can either be claimed as extra income (ceiling for the trust is 12 PAs) or taken as time in lieu.
