Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior SHO post in Otolaryngology at Northampton General Hospital. This post will suit those interested in establishing a career in surgery, whether that be within ENT or Max-Fax (we have very close links with our Maxillo-Facial colleagues). Although the post is initially for 6 months, the aim is to create a permanent post. There is also the opportunity of progression to Speciality Doctor.

Main duties of the job

Otolaryngology ward rounds covering the Head and Neck Ward, Elective patients on Althorp Ward and anyoutliers.2. Otolaryngology on calls covering admissions through the emergency department, emergency clinic, theatres,and outpatients' clinics (training and support will be provided in the form of an induction to ENT and regulardepartmental teaching) as well as supporting the wards with admitted patients.3. Maxillo-Facial on call providing initial clerking and resuscitation of patient before discussion with Maxillo-Facialregistrar on call.4. Supporting otolaryngology cases in the emergency theatre when required5. Attending elective theatre lists and outpatients' clinics to support your learning and development6. Clinical governance including the participation in effective clinical audit and continuing medical education7. Contribute to department audit and research with consultant supervision. Opportunities are available toundertake personal research and enhance CV.8. Participation in regional ENT meetings, by creating and presenting ENT specific projects or research.9. Participation in teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students and other hospital employees asrequired.

About us

A wide-ranging Head & Neck service is provided by Northampton General Hospital. The directorate includes ENT, Headand Neck Surgery as well as a large Maxillofacial Surgery Department. The main departments are supported by modernAdult and Paediatric audiology departments as well as Speech and Language Therapy departments. We also havespecialist nurses in oncology, otology and laryngectomy & tracheostomy care. There is a staffed ENT emergency clinic, which runs Monday to Friday, nine-to-five, and is staffed. There is a main operating theatre suite where the Major Head and Neck cancer cases are carried out. We also have a dedicated Day Surgery Unit where all routine ENT surgery is carried out.The radiology department provides normal radiographic cover including CT and MRI scanning, and in general the onlysurgery referred away from the unit is that which needs Neurosurgical or Cardio-thoracic involvement. We have regularRadiology meetings and there is a weekly dedicated one stop head and neck radiology clinic.The on-call system is a three tier on call rota, with the registrar and consultant being non-resident out of hours. Out ofhours and at the weekend the on-call team is based at Northampton General Hospital but providing cover to KetteringGeneral Hospital, and with all admissions being transferred to Northampton General Hospital.

You will be covering one of the seven Senior Otolaryngology SHO positions. Your main responsibilities will be attendingward round whenever you are on shift and helping with any jobs given on the round that require Senior SHO input.
