Job summary

We are looking to appoint a Locum consultant vascular surgeon to join the Northamptonshire Vascular Service.

This post will cover elective and on-call vascular surgery at Northampton General Hospital as well as providing satellite clinics and day case surgery at Kettering General Hospital. NGH is the designated arterial centre for Northamptonshire and the successful applicant will be part of a team of six vascular surgeons and three interventional radiologists, who cover all aspects of vascular surgery including aortic surgery, complex endovascular lower limb and aortic interventions and carotid disease. The service is affiliated to the Northamptonshire AAA Screening Programme. It also supports the hyper acute stroke unit and countywide renal services and is central to a well-established multidisciplinary diabetic foot service.

This is a replacement post, and is expected to commence in April 2021. It will be for 6 months in the first instance with an opportunity for extension, as the service seeks to appoint to the substantive post in due course.

Main duties of the job

The initial job plan comprises a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. This consists of 8.5 direct clinical care PAs (including on call) and 1.5 supporting professional activity Pas and is subject to annual review with the Clinical Director.

The service currently operates a six week rolling time table. Elective activities will include on average one all-day theatre list per week and two outpatient clinics per week besides attendance at Vascular MDT, weekly planning and M & M meetings on Fridays.

A representative initial job plan of the post holder is as shown. (Clinics are held in NGH, with all consultants undertaking outreach clinics in KGH, Corby and Nene Park). The detailed job plan will be subject to agreement with the service lead and the Trust.

About us

NGH is one of the largest employers in the area and we are on an exciting journey. All of our divisions are committed to doing things better, with more efficiency as wemodernise and advance. We have also entered into a Group Model with neighbouring Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

With over 200 consultants, a similar number of trainees and approximately 60 medical undergraduates throughout the year, NGH provides comprehensive care and extensive training opportunities.

With this in mind, we have built a state of the art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners.

NGH has an excellent social centre with a large library, gym with swimming pool and the Cripps Education Centre where lunch and snacks are available away from the main hospital. Frequent educational sessions run in the Centre for all levels of staff and it serves as an oasis from the clinical areas.
