Job summary

We are looking for a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, to join the existing complement of 2 Consultants supported by 2 LED (Trust Grade) registrars in providing a General Plastic Surgery service within Northampton General Hospital. The hospital provides services (mainly) to a catchment of 400,000 approx. in Northampton town, and South Northamptonshire as well as adjacent areas of Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.

The existing unit was formed in 2006 to provide high quality hand trauma, skin cancer and breast reconstruction services along with general reconstructive surgery, elective hand surgery (including paediatric) and perineal reconstruction following Gynae and colorectal cancer treatment.

Whilst the appointee to this post will support and expand the existing structure in providing this broad general plastic surgery service there will also be opportunities to develop a special interest. In that regard, a special interest in skin cancer treatment would be particularly welcome. The unit has recently developed a very successful one-stop service to improve service provision during the Covid-19 pandemic and it is expected this service will continue into the longer term post-covid. The unit activity is based around the Integrated Surgery unit where there are outpatient consulting suites, a daily nurse-led dressing clinic and the recently developed Procedure Room where local anaesthetic procedures (both trauma and elective) are carried out daily.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible, along with the existing consultants, for the day-to-day provision of a broad range of plastic surgery services to patients referred to the department from primary care, secondary care colleagues within the Trust and from the Accident and Emergency department. Care will be provided both directly in person and by supervision of junior colleagues (Trust Grade registrars) and in collaboration with consultant colleagues as necessary. The service is currently provided on a 5-day week basis. There is no commitment to on-call nights or weekend work at present but with future expansion this may change. However, the post holder will be required to be available to offer advice to the registrars or ward staff as required.

There will be an opportunity to develop one or more special interests within the field of plastic surgery and a particular interest in Skin Cancer treatment would particularly complement the existing services. Participation in the weekly skin cancer MDT is in any case required.

Participation in local and regional audit is a key required feature of the post. The Unit holds a monthly clinical audit and governance meeting to which the post holder will be expected to contribute. A monthly clinical pathology meeting is also held.

About us

With this in mind, we have built a state of the art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners.
