Job summary
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced OHA to join the team in a well established busy Occupational Health Service.
One of the key areas of work will be to provide leadership to the clinical team from previous experience working in occupational health at a senior level.
Areas of work includes supporting the running of the day to day clinical services; along with utilising the eOPAS IT system to its fullest capacity to streamline systems and processes and supporting new and innovative internal and external service provision.
Excellent IT skills and knowledge will be paramount to delivering the service along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills which are essential. Together with the ability to work as part of the team and on own initiative the post requires a self-motivating professional with a pro-active approach to Occupational Health.
Candidates must be a Registered Nurse (RN) with an Occupational Health qualification or equivalent Occupational Health experience with transferable skills /qualifications, together with significant NHS experience.
Some flexibility with hours and work site may be required on occasions.
Basis hours of work 08:0016:00 Monday to Friday with the flexibility to cover project work and national campaign work when required.
Main duties of the job
Provide clinical and professional leadership within the department. Support the development of the Occupational Health Service of the Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust under the guidance of the Senior Team making recommendations for service improvements, and contribute to any departmental policies and procedures.
Provide knowledge and skills to ensure the provision and management of comprehensive occupational health programme for all staff ensuring that the occupational health needs of the Trust and other customers are met.
This may include, interpreting and analysing medical conditions and sensitive information in a non-judgemental manner and being accountable for recommendations and outcomes.
Promote a high quality, cost effective and efficient service, in line with its business plan, to the Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and its other customers
Work autonomously and as a team member using initiative and forward thinking in all aspect of the service to provide innovation within the OH setting.

The clinical role of the senior clinic nurse will include being competent to carry out the following activities and work within clear pathways/protocols, report your findings accurately and to liaise with Senior team where results are outside of agreed parameters. Show significant OH knowledge and experience through day to day support of junior staff and service provision.
- Case management of day to day referrals including advice for return to work, adjustments, onward referral to OH Physician either from managers or self-referral from employees
- Contamination Injury assessment and treatment

Assess contamination injuries and plan clinical care for the prevention of blood borne viruses (BBV); including the collection of samples for BBV testing and provision of hepatitis B vaccinations
Exposure to high risk blood samples will be part of this process. This will require daily clinical judgements as to the care pathway for high risk events and take advice from Senior OH practitioners and OH Physician.
To be responsible for the laboratory specimen process, including the collection of samples including high risk samples (HIV /Hep B/Hep C) using fine motor skills and dexterity using blood sampling equipment. This will involve exposure to unpleasant bodily fluids on a daily basis.
Communicate with patients on a daily basis including sensitive health information. Manage patients clinical expectations and support patients being upset or aggressive.
To request and retrieve blood tests using the ICE system assessing the results and planning patient screening pathway.
Carry out audiometry screening using bespoke audiometry software and equipment; this includes assessing the patient prior to the screening, internal examination of the ear, using an industrial audiometer and audiometric soundproof booth.
Carry out spirometry screening using highly sensitive equipment, this includes assessment of the health of the patient prior to screening.
Carry out vision screening as part of health assessments and medicals using specialist equipment.
Carry out fitness to work medicals which includes paramedic medicals and future service development in lift truck medicals.
Making daily clinical judgements on the screening required, booking appointments and carrying out clinic nurse activities. This includes work required for external contract clients, private clients, junior Drs rotations and general recruitment across the NGH/KGH group.
Across group working includes healthcare students and rotational and bank staff.
Act as a Chain of Custody collection officer for Drug and Alcohol screening. Collect samples on an individual patient basis under strict confidential national protocols which are admissible in a court of law. This includes completing the assessment documentation including details of any drugs of abuse, prescription and non-prescription medication used. Package and send the samples to the contracted laboratory for these services.
Use highly sensitive breath analysis equipment to determine the current level of alcohol the patient has ingested. Print the results and discuss with the patient. Record the results and pass to the senior clinical team for further assessment if required.
Confidential informal counselling - this may involve dealing with highly sensitive or distressing information with referral to the external formal counselling service
