Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Urological Surgery at Northampton General Hospital. The appointee will provide a general urological service but can develop a special interest to complement and add to the existing consultant body.

The successful candidate will replace an existing post in a team of 4 consultants at present. The appointee will join a young, dynamic department with a focus in delivering a high quality, modern urology service.

The department and the hospital are dedicated in delivering the educational programme of the University of Leicester medical school as well as receiving students from Oxford University. Opportunities are available to become more actively involved in the medical school. Furthermore, there are strong links to Health Education East Midlands and becoming active in the administration of the deanery.

Main duties of the job

The agreed job plan comprises a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. This consists of 8.5 direct clinical care PAs and a minimum of 1.5 supporting professional activity PAs. The job plan is subject to annual review with the Clinical Director.

The consultants have recently moved to a consultant of the week (COW) on-call model and are freed from elective activities in the morning to review emergency admissions, and attend a Friday prostate MRI review meeting. Triage of 1 stop referrals will be a part of the COW morning duties. Afternoon sessions when on call will involve virtual clinics.

The working day in theatre runs from 08.45 -1.00pm and 1.45pm-6.00pm, with a 30 minute break between the morning and afternoon session for all day lists.

About us

NGH is one of the largest employers in the area and we are on an exciting journey. All of our divisions are committed to doing things better, with more efficiency as wemodernise and advance. We have also entered into a Group Model with neighbouring Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

With over 200 consultants, a similar number of trainees and approximately 60 medical undergraduates throughout the year, NGH provides comprehensive care and extensive training opportunities.

With this in mind, we have built a state of the art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners.

NGH has an excellent social centre with a large library, gym with swimming pool and the Cripps Education Centre where lunch and snacks are available away from the main hospital. Frequent educational sessions run in the Centre for all levels of staff and it serves as an oasis from the clinical areas.
