Job summary
Kettering General Hospital is seeking a dedicated Locum Consultant General Surgeon to join our dynamic team. In the role, you will deliver high-quality surgical services to both inpatients and outpatients, working collaboratively with fellow consultants to drive service development.
This unique opportunity to play a key role in the growth of the general surgery department, with active participation in the on-call rota. You'll be part of a supportive and forward-thinking environment.
Main duties of the job
Provide comprehensive general surgical services, including elective and emergency surgeries, with a 1 in 8 on-call commitment for general surgery at Kettering General Hospital.
Deliver outpatient services for new referral and ongoing patient care.
Organise and participate in the teaching and training of resident doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
Actively engage in departmental matters concerning clinical governance and audit, providing leadership and support for effective service development.
Ensure active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and contribute to the development of clinical protocols, guidelines, and concise care pathways.
Promote a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and staff by attending relevant mandatory training requirements.
Maintain effective multidisciplinary team collaboration and foster partnerships with all professional colleagues.
Comply with all trust policies, demonstrating effective leadership and communication skills.

The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It should cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
On Call
1:8 on-call frequency supported by a team of four junior doctors during the day (FY1 + FY2 + 2x Registrar) and three at night (FY1 + FY2 + Registrar) All routine work is cancelled during this period. There is an emergency theatre available 24/7 with a separate trauma theatre for T&O.
Office Accommodation and Secretarial Support
A dedicated office space will be provided to the successful appointee and a Medical Secretary.
Mentorship
There is a mentorship scheme for all new consultant staff, this is designed to help and assist new appointees to settle into working at KGH as easily as possible. It is designed to assist individuals in a personal way to familiarise them with the Trust and how things work in practice.

- MMBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council
- Training and interest in elective and emergency general surgery
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the emergency care of patients, both paediatric and adults
- A wide range of clinical skills and practice in the specialty
Desirable
- MD, PhD or evidence of equivalent training an experience
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview
