Job summary

The Pharmacy Department is looking to recruit 6 Advanced Apprentice Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technicians.

To develop the necessary knowledge and skills to enable professional registration following completion of the Pharmacy Technician (Integrated) Apprenticeship. To rotate through the department gaining the skills to accurately dispense and final accuracy check a full range of medications and prescription types including CD's and oral cytotoxics, carry out all tasks related to medicines management including obtaining a medication history and assessing a patient's own supply of medications; and counsel patients on their medication within the department and at ward level.

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL

  1. To work with healthcare staff and patients in a polite and efficient manner (face to face, over the phone or by electronic methods), responding to their needs and within the limit of their knowledge, responsibilities and legal and professional requirements
  2. To dispense and final accuracy check all types of prescribed medicines, including oral cytotoxic and controlled drugs, in accordance with safe systems of work laid down in departmental procedures
  3. To work on the pharmacy reception, serving patients, receiving prescriptions, taking payments and managing the initial receipt of work into the department.
  4. Provide advice to staff, members of the public and patients on the use and side effects of medicines in accordance with departmental procedures
  5. To counsel patients and/or their carers on all aspects of their medication within the department or at ward level
  6. To work with other members of the pharmacy team and wider multi-disciplinary teams involved in patient care to provide a safe and effective medicines management process
  7. To complete and maintain records relating to the supply of medicines in accordance with departmental procedure and professional and legal requirements
  8. To provide advice to all healthcare professionals on the safe storage and handling of drugs

This is a training post designed to give the trainee the experience and knowledge to be able to qualify, register and work as a Pharmacy Technician and is a stepping stone to a wider career in Pharmacy. The apprentice is supported throughout training and work experience, and with support, will learn to complete a range of tasks within timescales to a competent standard. They are required to demonstrate excellent communication skills, be able to quickly learn new IT systems, be able to work efficiently and accurately, pay attention to detail and enjoy working as part of a team. This role involves patient contact within the Pharmacy Department and at ward level across a variety of specialities.

The successful candidate will be supported to gain the qualification, which is delivered by our training provider, Buttercups Training, and is achieved through distance learning, study via virtual classrooms and workplace activities. Study time will be allocated during the working week.

Career opportunities following qualification and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (the regulatory body for Pharmacy) include medicines management roles, aseptic preparation, staff training, clinical trials, procurement, and many more. This is an opportunity to have fabulous career and once qualified salaries range from £25,146 on qualifying to a possible £51,807 as your career progresses.

This position is for a 24 month fixed term contract with no guarantee of a substantive Pharmacy Technician post, although every effort will be made to find a suitable position once qualified. The post is full time Monday to Friday and will include participation in our Saturday, Sunday, and Bank Holiday rotas.

You will need to be highly committed to achieve this qualification as it requires participation and completion of a vigorous training and competency program. Individuals will need to be highly organised, self-motivated, and capable of meeting multiple deadlines.

Minimum entry requirements:-

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4-9 or A-C to include English Language, Maths and Science (preferably Chemistry or Biology) or Dual Science

It is essential that you meet the criteria and grade for the qualifications as detailed above.

Must NOT be in full time education by starting date of apprenticeship.

Must NOT hold a level 4 qualification or above unless the qualification is "materially different" from the apprenticeship. Queries in relation to prior qualifications will be individually assessed by our specialist tutors

For external candidates the post attracts an Annex 21 training pay scale and has a salary of £19,993.40 in the first year; and £21,421.50 in the 2nd year.

For internal candidates the post attracts an Annex 30 apprenticeship pay scale which means that salary will either the candidates existing pay scale or the Annex 21 training pay scale whichever is higher.

Prior to an interview being offered, candidates that meet all the minimum entry criteria and the apprentice eligibility criteria will be invited to attend a day of pre-screening assessments in

maths - 81 questions (a mixture of multiple choice and text based) which takes 90-120 minutes

English - 91 questions (a mixture of multiple choice and text based) which takes 90-120 minutes

science - 60 multiple choice questions based on chemistry and biology which is timed for 60 minutes to assess current level of knowledge.

Candidates who successfully complete the pre-screening assessments will then be invited to interview.
