Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and enterprising candidate to join a progressive and forward-thinking department of 13 consultants, each with their own special interest. We have well-developed services in high-risk obstetrics, minimal access surgery, infertility, colposcopy & out-patient hysteroscopy, uro-gynaecology and oncology services.
This post is a new position created to support the Ockenden recommendations for consultant presence on labour ward, maternity assessment areas (Fetal Health Unit), elective caesarean sections with additional responsibilities to oversee the Serious Incident reviews and Governance.
This is a fixed term contract till March 2024 with a likelihood of conversion to a substantive position in the next financial year. Currently, this job will not have weekend on call commitments. The successful candidate will do a twilight and night (non-resident) on call twice a month. The gynaecology component of the on-call will be supported by another consultant in rotation.
This rota provides 66 hours of prospective Consultant labour ward cover per week in line with Maternity Matters, NHSLA and RCOG requirements and the new Ockenden recommendation. About us
The Hospital has a state of the art 16 bed ITU/HDU. There is a two bed Enhanced Care facility on Labour Ward where patients are managed with multidisciplinary input from obstetricians, anaesthetists, and physicians.
There are fully supporting Pathology and Radiology services. Radiology provides ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI and computerised axial tomography on site. There is a well-equipped obstetric ultrasound department in the Maternity Unit as well as a specialised Fetal Medicine Service provided by visiting Consultants from University Hospital of Leicester.
There is excellent Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy staffing including a highly skilled nurse specialist in Gynae-Oncology.

PERIPHERAL CLINICS
Because of the geography of the area the Trust has peripheral clinics in several areas. In addition to those at Kettering there are clinics run at Corby Diagnostic Centre and in Nene Park Outpatients Clinic. Most peripheral clinics are combined Obstetrics and Gynaecology and have varying facilities, including phlebotomy, X-Ray and ultrasound.
GYNAECOLOGY
There is a 12-bedded gynaecology ward which manages elective surgical and emergency admissions. There is a 4 -bedded day case ward that accommodates patients undergoing medical termination of pregnancy. Surgical terminations of pregnancy are performed on site. We have an emergency assessment unit where patients with early pregnancy or acute gynaecological problems are assessed.
ANTENATAL SCREENING
We offer a full range of prenatal screening services including early dating scans, Nuchal Translucency and biochemical screening. We offer CVS as well as Amniocentesis. The Fetal Medicine Service is supported by Consultants from University Hospital of Leicester (attending 2 clinics per week). A Consultant Clinical Geneticist who covers the county supports the genetic services. There are on site prenatal counselling facilities with a specialist midwife and the service is offered to all women as part of their routine antenatal care.
THEATRES
There are two large and fully equipped state of the art theatres opened in February 2016. One is for routine gynaecology and the second theatre for Obstetrics. A third theatre is used for emergencies for obstetrics and gynaecology.
OUTPATIENTS
There is a modern outpatient clinic area with a minor operations suite and colposcopy service. In addition to general clinics there are several specialised clinics:

One Stop Hysteroscopy clinic
Urodynamic Clinic
Pre-operative Assessment clinics
Medical terminations

We have a well-developed cancer unit, in the Centenary Wing, at Kettering and majority of gynaecology chemotherapy is administered here. Open multidisciplinary Gynae Oncology meetings video-linked to the cancer centre in Northampton are held weekly.
TEACHING
We are part of the East Midlands Deanery. There are separate ST1/ST2 and ST3 upwards training programmes. The other fixed teaching sessions are:
- Tuesday morning Gynae Oncology MDT meeting
- Friday morning CTG meeting Friday day teaching session including perinatal morbidity/mortality and gynaecology morbidity meeting
Audit
Audit is actively encouraged at all levels. All junior staff are given n audit project each; six monthly for SHOs and annually for Registrars.
Office and Secretarial Support
Office space and secretarial support will be in place for this post.
Administration
The appointee automatically becomes a member of the local Medical Advisory Committee. The candidate will be expected to share in the general administration and management functions of the department.
Clinical Commitment
Shifting of clinical commitment from junior doctors to nursing staff has been developed actively in Kettering to allow more time for training and adaptability as further changes are imposed on us by reduction of Junior Doctors hours. We have specialist nurses in Gynae Oncology, Infertility, Termination of Pregnancy and Prenatal Diagnosis who all contribute to running the department.
ON-CALL
Currently, this job will not have weekend on call commitments. The successful candidate will do a twilight and night (non-resident) on call twice a month. The gynaecology component of the on-call will be supported by another consultant in rotation.
The above on calls hours will be 5pm in the evening to the following morning 8am. Of these hours, the consultant is required to be on site between 5-7pm and then is expected to be within 30 minutes of the hospital.
Daytime consultant labour ward cover is 8am to 6pm. On Mondays to Fridays the Night On call will start with hand-over at 5-6pm and be resident for one hour until 7pm. On call will finish at 8am next morning.
Allocation of PAs for the post- Subject to discussion and alteration depending on special interests and departmental needs.
