Job summary

To develop the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviors to enable professional registration following completion of the Pharmacy Technician (Integrated) Apprenticeship. This role involves providing person centred pharmaceutical care at ward level across a variety of specialties and gaining and maintaining all relevant competencies within the dispensary area.

Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Department at Kettering General Hospital has an opportunity to recruit a second year Advanced Apprentice Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician to enable them to complete their apprenticeship within a secondary care environment.

This is a training post designed to give the trainee the experience and knowledge to be able to qualify, register and work as a Pharmacy Technician and is a stepping stone to a wider career in Pharmacy. The apprentice will be supported through the remainder of their training and work experience. This role involves providing person centred pharmaceutical care at ward level across a variety of specialities and gaining all relevant competencies within the dispensary area.

CLINICAL:

  1. To work with healthcare staff and patients in a polite and efficient manner (face to face, over the phone or by electronic methods), responding to their needs and within the limits of their knowledge, responsibilities and legal and professional requirements.

  1. To dispense and final accuracy check all types of prescribed medicines, including oral cytotoxic and controlled drugs, in accordance with safe systems of work laid down in departmental procedures.

  1. To work on the pharmacy reception, serving patients, receiving prescriptions, taking payments and managing the initial receipt of work into the department.
  2. Provide advice to staff, members of the public and patients on the use and side effects of medicines in accordance with departmental procedures.

  1. To counsel patients and/or their carers on all aspects of their medication within the department or at ward level

  1. To work with other members of the pharmacy team and wider multi-disciplinary teams involved in patient care to provide a safe and effective medicines management process

  1. To complete and maintain records relating to the supply of medicines in accordance with departmental procedure and professional and legal requirements.

  1. To provide advice to all healthcare professionals on the safe storage and handling of drugs.

  1. To have a working knowledge of the Hospital Drug Formulary and seek advice from the dispensary lead technician or the pharmacist on obtaining drugs not on the Hospital Formulary.

AUDIT RESEARCH AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

  1. To participate in any relevant audit being undertaken by the department.

  1. To initiate audits relevant to patient care.

  1. To take an active role in contributing towards service development and improvement both within the Pharmacy and the hospital as a whole.

EDUCATION

1. To seek to learn at every opportunity and take responsibility for own learning and be able to identify when extra support/guidance is required and raise this in a timely manner with the Workplace Training Supervisor

2. To participate in the training of other pharmacy staff when appropriate.

3. To develop and demonstrate skills at a level of competency to successfully complete the Pharmacy Technician (Integrated) Apprenticeship with a commitment to gather evidence to display an appropriate level of competence and consistently meet required deadlines.

4. To develop the skills and understanding to be able to successfully complete the End Point Assessment that is required to complete the apprenticeship.

5. To comply with the Trusts mandatory training programme. To participate with relevant departmental competency programmes and ensure these are kept up to date

6. Continuously develop new skills and knowledge fundamental to professional and personal development.

7. Recognise appropriate behaviours for members of the profession and develop a sufficiently professional attitude to demonstrate these behaviours in practice.

8. To contribute towards working in a safe environment by self-checking your own work and nurturing a spirit of self-checking in others.

MANAGEMENT

1. To establish and maintain effective communication with all members of the Pharmacy team and the wider multi-disciplinary teams within the Trust.

2. To work in line with departmental procedures and highlight any discrepancies in current practice to the line manager so that procedures are constantly reviewed and updated.

3. To handle cash within the department in accordance with departmental procedures.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE:

1. To take an active role in supporting the clinical governance agenda both within the Pharmacy department and the Trust.

2. To participate in the investigation of incidents regarding medicines.

3. To maintain appropriate standards of service and safety to comply with the Trust Control of Medicines Policy and to ensure that the principles of safe and secure handling of medicines are adopted (Duthie Report 1988).

Statutory and miscellaneous

This post involves access to patients and their data including children and/or vulnerable adults as defined by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It will therefore be necessary to apply for and be in receipt of a satisfactory standard DBS check of the post holder. (this statement relates to patient facing but non clinical role)

The Trust requires all roles requiring DBS check, to have a satisfactory DBS recheck every three years

Be responsible for maintaining own vaccinations/Hepatitis B immunity.

Safeguard patient confidentiality at all times including adherence to the Data Protection Act.
