Job summary

The Stoma Nursing Team are looking for an experienced surgical nurse looking to branch out and develop their stoma care knowledge over a twelve month period.

The post holder needs;

  1. Surgical Nursing experience
  2. Supporting manager to agree release by September 2023 ( if currently working full time currently shared role can be considered to maintain full time working)
  3. Reach out to Stoma Nursing team to gain understanding of role and expectations.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide knowledge and expertise in the care and management of pre- and post-operative patients who may or are about to have a stoma.

  • Work in collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary team to provide advice and leadership in the nursing management of stoma patients.
  • To maintain a program of care that includes psychological, physical, spiritual and rehabilitation aspects to enable the patient to retain the highest quality of life possible.
  • Contribute to teaching programs for other Health Care Professionals.
  • To work proactively to support the lead stoma care nurse in the delivery of high-quality Stoma Care and contribute towards the ongoing development of the stoma service.

Key roles and responsibilities of the Stoma Care Nurse are as follows:

  • Able to provide expert nursing care, advice, support and education to patients who have or are about to have a stoma, their family and other Health Care Professionals
  • Able to assess, implement and evaluate care for stoma patients as they progress through their pathway, communicating effectively in ways that will empower them to make informed choices
  • Support individuals who have or are about to have a stoma with adjusting to an altered body image and potential lifestyle adaptations so they can retain the highest quality of life possible
  • Site the stoma position in collaboration with the patient, for elective patients who require a stoma and emergency patients if appropriate.
  • To have in depth knowledge of available stoma appliances, accessories and treatments available to patients as they progress through their pathway
  • Be able to communicate and advise on a wide selection of stoma equipment and the suitability of products for patients
  • Provide advice and support to all members of the multidisciplinary team in the care of stoma patients in ward, outpatient and the community setting.
  • Run weekly stoma clinic as needed, advising patients on stoma products and all aspects of stoma management, making referrals as required to other Health Care Professionals
  • An expert clinical practitioner who is able to articulate best practice within the stoma care specialty
  • An effective role model who emulates expert practice and professional standards
